A magical place to stay for visiting the Grand Canyon and much more!
Experience an ideally-situated, magical Mountain Getaway with Incredible Views and so very much to offer!
Located in the heart of the Coconino National Forest along the San Francisco Peaks scenic corridor just north of Flagstaff, this spectacular and convenient location is just one thing that sets The Mountain Star apart from other area properties.
The Mountain Star, located at an elevation of 8,000 feet (2,438 meters) on 5 beautiful acres and backed by National Forest land, offers breath-taking natural beauty, expansive views, direct and easy access to nature, boundless outdoor activities (nature walks and hikes, biking, climbing, etc.) and a spectacular night sky. It is a sanctuary for inspiration, relaxation, reflection and rejuvenation, as well as being perfectly situated for outdoor fun and adventure.
The Mountain Star is less than one hour’s drive from the Grand Canyon’s main entrance, and if you don’t want to drive yourself, a local tour company van will pick you up directly from this property. So enjoy the Grand Canyon and then leave the heat and crowds behind to enjoy your very own mountain retreat!
The Mountain Star is completely wind and sun powered (with an automatic propane generator backup system). During the warmer months, the home is "air conditioned" with refreshing mountain air using the operable windows that are in every room of the house, ceiling fans throughout and the operable window blinds throughout...and nights are always refreshingly cool in the warmest of summertime. During the colder months, The Mountain Star stays warm with 3 radiant heaters, a gas "fire place" and a very efficient, living room pellet stove.

The Mountain Star in Flagstaff/Grand Canyon area Grand Canyon, Arizona
Additional Location Information
The Mountain Star is a rare and amazing location. It has the beauty and openness of a remote mountain location yet is only 20 miles from the key regional center and resort town of Flagstaff. It is easily accessed via a well-maintained and beautiful, undivided 2-lane highway (AZ 180) that exists almost exclusively to provide thoroughfare to the Grand Canyon. The Mountain Star’s five acres are part of an area known as Kendrick Park, a 180-acre private land “island” in the middle of the Coconino National Forest (the largest stand of Ponderosa Pine in North America). The home itself is directly backed by the national forest. Hiking and biking opportunities abound and are as close as the front door!
I believe this home offers the most beautiful and panoramic views available in Northern Arizona. The home’s extensive windowing was designed specifically for the views. The home directly faces the beautiful San Francisco Peaks to the south, Kendrick Peak to the west, Saddle Mountain to the east and forested hills to the north. Though easily accessed, it is completely “off-the-grid” and is powered by the sun and the wind. At 2,438 meters (8,000 feet) of elevation, the night sky is glorious.
Note: Although the house does not offer WIFI, cellular internet signal is within range for most carriers (especially Verizon and AT&T;), so those with smart phones or cellular hotspots will have internet capability

The Mountain Star was a really unique property that had something for every member of our family (ranging from age one to 71). I will never forget doing yoga and reading in the loft with an amazing view while my kids played in the living room below. The owner had great insights and recommendations on hikes and attractions in the area. We will be back!

Stayed at the Mountain Star for a long weekend with friends. We were all very impressed with the home and the surroundings, it's absolutely beautiful. Our intent was to spend most of our time skiing but instead we took time to relax and enjoy the views, we didn't want to leave! The night sky was amazing and the home was equipped with everything one would need for a fun night in. We will definitely be back!

Two families stayed in the cabin from 21st to 23rd in December. It is warm and comfortable like home. The view is beautiful. We live in Phoenix, so very enjoy this white Christmas. For the trip to both Grand Canyon and Snow Bowl, the location is good trade-off. This is a wonderful place for high-quality family hours.

The Morning Star was a wonderful base for a holiday away from it all but with all the comforts of home. We had a very warm welcome when we arrived and Rob, the owner, was close by to keep an eye on us, see to our needs and offer advice, especially as the national parks were closed. This was a lovely house with everything for our practical needs in a truly awe inspiring setting. It was wonderful to watch the sun coming up from behind the mountains, the bluebirds swooping in to feed on the balcony, the wildlife creeping through the long grass and the amazing night sky without light pollution. We loved the design of this open plan house, with two bedrooms fully accessible to all ages but be aware - the other upper bedroom is only accessible by a steep loft ladder and had no bathroom in this level. Also weather can be extreme at this height above sea level, (hot during the day, windy and freezing at night) so clothing for all types of conditions is needed.
With no access to the national parks there were lots of other options for getting out in the wilds with the local state parks being the obvious choice.
If you want to let go of the rest of the world, come to Mountain

Mountain Star is such a beautiful, quiet, peaceful, and serene place to be. I've never rented a complete home on vacation before and the experience was wonderful. Rob was waiting for us when we pulled in to give us a tour of the home. The personal touches he provided were very much appreciated, champagne upon arrival and a lovely note on the blackboard welcoming us. We discovered there was so much to do there: hiking, eating, Snow Bowl, Flagstaff, and the Grand Canyon. Sitting on the wrap-around deck looking out upon the large meadow, your eyes are drawn to the beautiful majesty of the San Francisco Peaks...breathtaking. At night, we could see the Milky Way and billions of stars plus an occasional falling star! Especially nice to get away from TV, news, jobs, etc. and enjoy the company of the 3 ladies I was with. Truly an exceptional vacation experience. I would highly recommend Mountain Star to anyone.
Natural Wonder in abundance, plus a lovely, comfortable house.

We stayed for three nights at Mountain Star and we loved it. The house is well equipped ( including delicious filtered natural water from the fridge! ), and comfortable as well as being fun. Musical instruments, games, Dvd's, fab sound system and books. The outstanding part of our stay was the natural environment, which this brilliantly designed house embraces so well. Sitting on the porch by the fire pit, listening to our music whilst watching the amazing full moon rise from behind the mountain was the highlight of our stay. The high powered binoculars also made for some fantastic star gazing opportunities in this dark sky area. The Great Bear has never looked so great! An easy drive from Flagstaff ( took us about 25 minutes ) and great for the Grand Canyon and the unmarked trail ( Rob will share the secret of it's location ) to the most awesome view of it. Our three days here left us feeling relaxed in mind, body and spirit. This from a couple of cynical old Londoners! Rob is a charming host and we are already planning a return trip, for longer this time to take full advantage of the hiking and mountain biking in the area. If you're going to stay here, lucky you. I'm off to look at my amazing picture of the Moon and the Mountain.
Surround yourself in beauty, peace and tranquility!

After staying at the Mountain Star Resort, in September 2013, I felt refreshed, renewed and rejuvenated! While staying at the Mountain Star Resort, I felt I was wrapped in a warm, soft blanket...peaceful, calm and serene. I can honestly say this was one of the most relaxing experiences I have ever had! Breathing in the fresh, pine mountain air and taking in the amazing mountain views, I was transported to a special place! It felt like home! Our host and friend, Rob Dutton, was so easy to work with and he added all the little touches that made us feel so special and right at home! What a great place to escape to and get away from it all! I highly recommend the Mountain Star Resort!

This is a man's dream house and you can live in it for a while. It feels like you have come home because it is so personal. It's not a cold, featureless hotel room. It takes time to tour the house because there is so much to see and do and admire. The house is a reflection of the owner and when you meet Rob you'll see what I mean.
Flagstaff and all it has to offer is nearby as well as the Grand Canyon. Hiking, biking, dining, shopping. . what more could you want? Oh yes, the stars! The stars!
The only drawback would be if you have difficulty walking up steps.

This resort provides relaxation and plenty of opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, go hiking or just hang out and see movies, read books or chill to music (there is no tv service here). If you plan to eat in make sure you buy groceries for the number of days you are going to be there, the closest store is a 20 minute drive away. We were looking for peace & quite and there is plenty of that along with beautiful night skies filled with stars to gaze at and also beautiful mountains that greet you every morning. If you are looking for a good central point for access to Snow Bowl or the Grand Canyon this would be the place.

The best place that we ever have stayed in Flagstaff. The Property, Views, Deck and Rob the owner were all awesome. This is a great place to stay and relax to go hiking with so many trails close to the property. We can't wait until our next visit. So if you want some spiritual relaxation and positive energy go and visit the Mountain Star Resort. It truly is a hidden gem in Flagstaff. Thanks Rob for a great time!

My daughter and I stayed for 2 days, and were very happy to have such nice accomodations. On our second night we had a spectacular view of the stars. I took some nice pictured of birds, rabbits, the neighbors horse & mule from the balcony. Unfortunately there was no aC and the temperatures were quite high during our visit. I would recommend bottled water for drinking and cooking. The Mountain Star Resort was cozy and felt like a home away from home. Read more
Thank you, Tracy! I am glad you enjoyed your stay at The Mountain Star! I am a little perplexed, however, that you would recommend bottled water for drinking and cooking. The water comes from either the inner basin of the San Francisco Peaks or local area high elevation aquifers and is of excellent quality and taste.

My wife and I enjoy romantic getaways and were thrilled to come across The Mountain Star Resort last fall. Our stay was so wonderful we found ourselves planning our next trip while enjoying a cup of coffee and the breath-taking views from the wrap-around upper deck on our second day.
This lovely home, designed by its talented owner, is set in a wide valley facing the slopes of Mt. Humphreys, at 13,000' elevation the highest mountain in arizona. Every season here can be enjoyed in its spectacular beauty.
As soon as we stepped inside the Mountain Star it felt like our home away from home, and we knew that we would not want to leave. The resort is uniquely beautiful inside and out, and has all the comforts and amenities you could ask for. If you enjoy the great outdoors, and / or the quiet solitude of a beautiful mountain home, treat yourself to a stay at the Mountain Star.
The Mountain Star is located about 26 miles north of Flagstaff, placing it in proximity to some of the most important scenic and historical treasures of the West. Artists, adventurers, or anyone seeking a peaceful retreat will find the home of your dreams at the Mountain Star.

My husband and I spent time in this beautiful home with a group of friends just to relax and enjoy the scenario. Not only is the home itself beautiful (I believe it's fairly new construction) with a gorgeous open great room (including kitchen, dining, livingroom areas), but the view is phenomenal. The San Francisco Peaks (home of arizona Snowbowl) are breathtaking. The mountains are visible both inside the home, as well as from the wrap around second story deck. My favorite feature is the upstairs loft...what a unique and peaceful setting for snuggling up with a book and a blanket during a winter snow storm with some hot chocolate!

This home is welcoming and is tucked away from any and all worries. You are surrounding by beautiful mountains and wildlife that you can enjoy all day and night just by sitting on the deck or by going hiking in the nearby wilderness. The night sky is amazing. This home is perfectly located within 1 hour of several day trip locations. One visit to this home and your hooked.

I truly enjoyed every minute while at the Mountain Star. The views are breathtaking and the evening sunsets are priceless. To be surrounded by natural settings and wild life is what makes the Mountain Star so spectacular. Coming from the city, it is rare to see stars at night. I had never seen so many stars and the details of the moon, till my stay at the Mountain Star. There are lots of hiking trails and places to cross country ski. The Mountain Star is located between the city of Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon. Also, just minutes away from the ski resort. The owner Rob Dutton is a great guy to work with. He made sure that my stay was peaceful and relaxing. I would highly recommend the Mountain Star for a romantic getaway or family vacation. An absolute-unforgettable vacation that I will treasure for a life time.

The first time I ever heard of Kendrick Park, near Flagstaff, AZ, was an article I read, in the July 2011 arizona Highways magazine. The first time I ever met Rob Dutton, the impressive owner of Mountain Star Resort, was in the fall of 2011. Rob's enthusiasm of his "piece of paradise" in Kendrick Park, and, life in general, is infectious! With Rob's people-loving personality, he will treat you like family & leave you with an unforgettable impression! He champions hospitality! Let me assure you that Rob will gain the greatest and most significant enjoyment when he sees and hears the enjoyment of his guests!

Apprehensions are normal when approaching a new destination. Ours melted away as we drove up the long drive from the main highway. Stunning is one of many words that describe the beauty of where this wonderful vacation property lies. The panorama that is right outside the window is something that can only be appreciated by seeing first hand. My traveling partner was truly left speechless and was making plans for a return trip when we arrived home. You won't find a better host than Rob, he is a real gem. Personable, talented, someone you'll love to hang out with, and will sing you a song at evenings end. Make The Mountain Star a definite stop on your journey in arizona, disappoint is not part of the stay.
