Description from owner

Description

In the wonderful Ionian Calabria, 15 minutes far from the crystal clear Ionian sea, a noble mansion with centuries of history, ideal location for cultural and social events, B&B accommodation, small ceremonies in its private chapel and much more.

Built by the feudal family de Luna d’Aragona, the mansion is dates back to the XIV century. It came in possession of Lupis family – coming from Giovinazzo in Apulia and originated by the Marquises of Soragna – in XVII century, for a number of entangled marital alliances with the families of de Luna, Amato, Infusini and Manso, all extinct into Marquises Lupis.

Among the relevant artistic elements are the eighteen-century monumental portal, handiwork of the school of sculpture of Serra San Bruno, the ancient library gathering more than 7.000 volumes, mainly ancient or rare editions, the family archive with original documents dating back to the XV century and some art collections (busts and portraits).

Palazzo Lupis is set on the site of the pre-existing small church of S. Antonio, of which the ancient crypt still exists in the small inner court, crypt that was also “pit” of the baronial prison of the feudal Lords. In the inner court there are also the bust of Baron Captain Giovanni Lupis von Rammer, inventor of the torpedo, and the bust of the historian and numismatic Marquis Domenico Lupis Crisafi. The large stained glasses show the coat of arm of Lupis.

Palazzo Lupis stands in the square dedicated to the Marquis Domenico Lupis Crisafi, in the historical centre, district “Castello” and enjoys a considerable environmental and scenic position.

Nowadays it belongs to the foundation established by the descendants, Don Marco and Donna Silvia Lupis Macedonio Palermo di Santa Margherita.

Palazzo Lupis is part of the Associazione Dimore Storiche Italiane - ADSI, member of the Historic European Houses Association

Palazzo Lupis in Grotteria, ancient noble mansion in Southern Italy, still inhabited by Marquis Lupis, Don Marco and Donna Silvia Lupis Macedonio Palermo di Santa Margherita, who preserve and manage it with great love, is the ideal location to organize cultural and social events thanks to its wonderful terrace of about 200 sqm, overlooking the valley and the crystal clear Ionian Sea, its lounges and its library containing more than 7000 volumes.

Perfect also for private small ceremonies (baptisms etc) in the palace private chapel.

The accommodation is granted by the B&B suite, 80 sqm (2 bedrooms: one double and one triple, each with its private bathroom, and a living room), rentable either in whole or as single rooms.
