Querencia, a restored colonial home in Guanajuato

La Querencia is an elegant home in “El Centro” built sometime in the 18th century and lovingly restored in 2009. The name translates to “sweet, safe spot or home ground” Inside the house you will find all the modern comforts but care was taken to preserve the aesthetics and feeling of the past.

La Querencia is truly down in the peaceful heart of Guanajuato and an easy, level walk to so much of what makes it special to be here. The fact that the living part of the home is on the second and third floor make it feel like a private sanctuary. You come in from the bustle of foot traffic outside, climb up one flight of stairs from the foyer ...Read more

Additional Location Information

Guanajuato is a city in a bowl. There are many pedestrian streets (callejons) that tie the city and it's residences together. The city has been called the most European city in Mexico. When we walk downstairs to the entry and out the door we are in a little plaza and on the street where the Teatro Juarez is and one block from El Jardin, a lovely green park with lots of tall trees and a gazebo, many restaurants and outdoor cafes. The mariachis wander and there is music everywhere. El Jardin is the core of the city and also a wonderful place to just sit on a bench and watch an interesting, colorful world go by. It is safe to walk in downtown Guanajuato. Not just safe but friendly as well. We are close to vegetable markets, meat markets, the two wonderful larger Mexican indoor and outdoor markets, the theater where our own symphony orchestra plays every Friday night, the street food stands, museums, etc. All of this is on level ground and an easy walk. Guanajuato is a city where everyone walks. It is also true that, with an elevation of almost 7000 feet above sea level, it can take awhile to adjust to this difference. You can get a great workout here just exploring up and down the bowl of the city and, when you want to go home just head downhill. Basically a car is not needed here. Taxis are plentiful and the premier buses inexpensive. San Miguel Allende is an easy direct one hour bus ride from here.
