Utopium was conceived as a place where Utopian thinking is encouraged. Where dialogues of what makes a better world can continue and artistic creativity is nurtured. It uses the image of the Mobius strip, a three dimensional infinity loop with a single surface that twists through space, to symbolize how seemingly independent aspects of our environment are actually parts of an interconnected whole sharing a common destiny. Specifically it looks at the relationship between various spheres such as the elemental world, the animal world, the flora or plant world, the social world, our inner world, and the future world.
Utopium's goal is not only to trigger thought, but also to exemplify harmonious interaction between these different worlds in an artistic and thoughtful manner. The Mobius House itself is an organic, terracotta-colored shape that undulates across the ground like a natural outcropping of the earth. In it, each room seeks to generate an atmosphere that contemplates our relation with one of the aspects of our environment: Terra Mauka Suite (the natural elemental world), The Ark (the animal kingdom), Forest Master Suite (the floral or plant world), The Path (the inner self), Odyssey Makai Suite (the future), or the Ohana Loft (the family and social world. Bamboo, eucalyptus, pine, guava and other renewable woods from the surrounding forest are selectively harvested, milled, and worked to become knobs, banisters, shelves, tables, and other furniture found in the living spaces. The majority of the property is held as open land or left in its natural forested state, additionally allowing it to serve as a preserve for wild animals and birds in the area.
Private guests as well as groups are welcome to visit and participate in this special and stimulating setting.
Forest Master Suite:
In this space, we feel like we are inside an Impressionist painting of a forest on a sunny day. The furniture is fashioned to further enhance this experience, starting with a 'grove' of eucalyptus, pine, and guava trees found on the property forming open shelves. Heart shaped seed pod handles on the kitchen cabinets, a natural slab Monkey pod desk, and an award winning 'floating rings' dining table made of exotic koa and wenge wood help complete the picture.
Terra Mauka Suite:
Dark dense stones, clear blue water, strongly colored sunsets, and rich red clay, all are part of the shades and tones that make up Terra. Original art pieces add perspective: a large three dimensional oil painting presents us with the surreal image of a giant lotus at sunrise thrusting through an arctic ocean like pointed icebergs. Another curved painting depicts a desolate desert skyline stretching away into a distant horizon. Here we are surrounded by Elemental Mother Earth, stripped clean of all the trimmings.
Odyssey Makai Suite:
This is a journey into outer space, where multiple suns and moons surround us in their continual spin through the Universe. Sitting downstairs we are on familiar terrain gazing up at the stars, while upstairs in the bedroom loft we feel like we are drifting in the cosmos. Both are designed to depict our interaction with the unknown and unexpected, our odyssey into the future.
Biblical lore has it that Noah built the Ark to save all animals from extinction, thus perpetuating the relationship between Man and Beast. This space takes the Horse to represent this connection that has lasted through the ages and across continents. There are Greek light stallions cavorting across the ceiling, and the walls are hung with pictures showing a Chinese sage and his mount standing hunched against a gale, a Mexican mare peering through her stall, and a heavily laden Bhutanese pack horse trudging steadily along. A Burmese horse puppet hangs from a corner of the four poster bed, and horse shoe sculptures from Israel play on each end table.
The serene, subtle shades of white on the walls of this space help lead us down the path to self reflection. White marble Zen 'islands' set in a flowing river tiled floor and a tranquil Buddhist Thanka floating above the bed are further aids to meditation. A graceful grove of Utopium bamboo is incorporated as shelves, and a white marble table with a crack running through it is a reminder that a 'flaw' is sometimes more interesting than perfection.
The Ohana Loft:
Ohana is your Hawaiian family, where everyone is bound together and integrated, cooperates and helps each other, and is loved and remembered. Here you are surrounded by photos of brothers playing, couples aging together, and artistic representations of family relationships, all reflecting our own Ohana.
