There are two homes at River Estate (One 2 bedroom 2 bath called the Guest House and one 3 bedroom 2 bath called the Riverhouse) Both homes are on the estate grounds next to the river in the same proximity to the water yet far apart.
On February, 10th, 2011 River Estate was named as one of 12 Romantic Getaways across the US in a LonleyPlanet website article published for Valentine's Day by one of their staff writers. River Estate was also named as one of the 10 most romantic properties in Hawaii by the well known and prestigious Gayot Travel Guide in 2009 ("The Guide to the Good Life") which was established in 1981 by Andre Gayot who invented the term Nouvelle Cuisine and has been directing travelers to the world's best restaurants, hotels, shops, sightseeing and cultural attractions since well before he published his first guidebook. River Estate has been featured in National Geographic Adventure Magazine in Feb. 2006 and the L.A. Times Online Travel Magazine Blog as well as Fodor's and Lonely Planet's Kauai travel guides.
We offer our guests the ultimate in comfort in our meticulously maintained accommodations, extreme privacy in the wonderful natural environment provided by our riverfront gardens and one of the best locations on Kauai. Bar none.
A Recent Guest Comment Says It All....
Riverhouse - Great house for a family! We had young children to entertain so we explored many close by beaches! We loved Ke'e beach at the end of the road especially. We hired a kayak and stand up paddle board and ventured down the river to the closest beach right from the house too! My husband is a surfer and Mark told us about a great surf spot and beach for the family. As we were late in the year for a north shore departure Napali Coast boat trip we opted for a helicopter ride. Kauai is absolutely spectacular from the air too! Thanks Mark for all you did to make our trip the best ever.

Immaculately clean properties, on the North shore of one of the greatest islands on Earth. And a f^ing spa tub on the lanai where you can see the river as you sip on your favorite cocktail after a long day of surfing!!! Man, I'm so sad that I can't go like once a month, but if you have the will and the means, Mark will take care of you and share his little slice of heaven with you. (Mark's the owner.)
My wife spent 10 days here a couple of weeks ago, and we wish we could have spent ten months instead...sigh...

When searching for where we would stay, my primary hope in renting a house was to be in the 'real' environment. I wanted to really see and hear Hawaii. This did exactly that.
The drive to the Guest House is down a long driveway lined with spectaluarly huge foliage, that I can only describe as prehistoric as I would imagine it. The sound of the rushing river just feet away from the house is soothing beyond belief. The sound of the frogs just after sunset lets you know you really are something tropical and amazing.
The house worked really well for us. We went with another couple and we each had 18 month olds. I worried about being some place that wasn't 'childproof' and my concerns vanished quickly. Though the house is raised up (I don't now what that is called there) and there are stairs to the front door, it was simple to block access for the kids to get outside. If we had wanted to leave the doors open, we knew a quick stop at Walmart for a baby gate for the stairs would have done the trick. Inside, there really wasn't anything they could get into. The only issue was the coffee table, but what child doesn't find a way to get hurt with a coffee table around?!
If you want secluded, tranquil, beautiful, peaceful, wonderful and waterfront, this is the place for you!

The River House is a wonderful place to stay on Kauai! We can't wait to return there. The listing description and pictures are very accurate. What you see at the website is what you get. On second thought--no it is not--it is even nicer than portrayed. The house is spotlessly clean and well maintained. The wood floors gleam. It is nicely and comfortably decorated. The kitchen is well equipped. We prepared most of our meals there and walked past the beautiful dining table to eat on the table on the lanai with the fantastic view of the river and all the beautiful trees and flowers. We picked our own grapefruit, tangelos, lime, and avocado. What a treat for us coming from a snowy climate. The spa on the lanai feels wonderful after a day of touring. The grill is nice and large enough for four. We all slept very well as the beds were quite comfortable.
The owner, Mark, was very helpful and I now call him a friend. He answered our questions about the area--especially where to snorkel and hike. He watched the weather and figured out the best times for us to do the activities we wanted. He made our bookings for a catamaran tour, helicopter tour, and luau. We were very well taken care of and everything went very seamlessly.
There is lots to do close by, but Kauai is small enough you can see all of it from your stay here. Or do nothing and enjoy the island ambience right there at the River House. It is located in a beautiful and quiet setting and it is nice to just sit back and enjoy the property.
Yes, we would definately recommend the River House to our friends and relatives. In fact, we already have. We can not wait to go back!

This visit marked my 8th year returning to River Estate (sometimes multiple times a year), and it just keeps getting better! Mark is a wonderful host and he thinks of everything you could need - if you don't see it, give him a call and he'll make it happen! Guest House was recently remodeled and it is worthy of a magazine spread - this is not a funky beach hut, but a sophisticated bungalow up in the trees that invites you to take off your slippahs Hawaiian style and make yourself at home. The setting is a secluded botanical garden alongside a bubbling stream with whispering bamboo a stones throw from some of the islands most beautiful beaches. This is truly island style living! Take advantage of the lovely kitchen and barbeque on the lanai to prepare a meal or two! Super private without feeling isolated, minutes from fabulous snorkeling beaches K'ee and Tunnels in one direction and the lovely Hanalei Town in the other direction. I have done a bit of traveling in my time and I have not stayed in a five star resort that can hold a candle to River Estate - this is experiencing Kauai the way it was meant to be experienced. If you have only stayed in hotels up to this point, you have a treat in store! River Estate is a gem and the value for the price can't be beat. Read more
Marla has become a good friend and as a long time customer she was the first person who kept coming back year after year. As someone who has lived here for over 40 years there are things that are hard to see from the myopic perspective that I have in the sheltered environment of Kauai. Marla was one of the first to wake me up to how special my property really is from the outside looking in. Connecting with my guests has become part of my job and that job has become very very rewarding. Mahalo Marla for your longtime support!
