♥ A personal message to my potential guests.... 'I have lived on Kauai for 45 years now, owned and managed River Estate since 1996. River Estate is one of the first Kauai vacation properties on the internet and we are still here. Our VRBO listing number is one of the top 5 oldest there is. #249 out of over 1,000,000 listings! I provide complimentary concierge services to all my guests from the moment you book. 45 years here helps in that regard. So please feel free to ask me about all Kauai has to offer and let me help you make the most of your vacation time here.'

♥ THERE ARE TWO HOMES at River Estate (One 2 bedroom 2 bath called the Guest House and one 3 bedroom 2 bath called the Riverhouse) Please google River Estate to see all the details for both homes on the River Estate website. Both homes are on the estate grounds next to the river in the same proximity to the water yet far apart. The property location is centrally located in the middle of the prime North shore area. You'll feel comfortable and relaxed the moment you arrive. Privacy and peace.

♥ Fifteen years ago my husband and I, after a long time together, decided to get married. We were living in California at the time and were frequent visitors to Kauai. We had seen River Estate many times on our travels and always said “If we ever get married it should be here”. So one day after our engagement I called Mark at River Estate, I told him about my plan to rent the entire property (There were 3 homes then) and having my wedding on the property. I have family from the east coast and my husband from Illinois. So people were coming from everywhere. We had some elderly people that couldn't make a beach wedding so we thought the grounds of the estate would be better! So Mark and I worked literally for over a year. He let me put a deposit to hold the dates and make payments! He told me about the local post office and how I should send all the decorations instead of flying with them. He even picked up my packages for me!!! We decorated the estate and had a little luau for our reception. Words can't describe the magic of our day. Mark even came to my wedding. I never had anyone except for family and friends help me so much from so far away. He did this out of kindness. That's the type of person Mark is.That was 15 years ago this June. We are coming back in October to renew our vows with our children. A lot has happened in 15 years ago and I contacted Mark just last week to see what was available for our week. He is just as amazing now as he was then. Sooo here we go again! I can't wait. Mahalo Mark. See you soon!!!

♥ My favorite comment to date - For this Hawaii-raised girl, this place was a dream come true! For twenty-eight years I had wanted to show my husband Kauai, and I could not have asked for a better location, accommodation, or host. From the day I called Mark to make reservations, through the actual stay, the entire experience was a first-class treat! Mark's attention to comfort, style, and details was phenomenal. He has thought of and provided everything for a perfect and relaxing vacation. And I mean everything! All you need are a swimming suit, a change of clothes and a few groceries. This is old Hawaii, plantation-style living at its finest and just exactly what I wanted my husband and boys to experience. You can't beat it for romance and setting. We were lulled to sleep by soft rain, and we awakened every morning to the soothing sounds of the river. The large property, extensive surrounding gardens and lush, tropical landscaping offer tranquility and complete privacy. The interior design is upscale, tropical, and comfortable. Mark hasn't missed any detail in decorating either! You can't help but relax and move naturally into 'Hawaiian time' mode. The property is located on the north end of the island within ten minutes of the famous Napali Coast and its challenging and breathtaking hiking trail, as well as one of the calmest and best snorkeling locations on the island. Within minutes the other direction, you have Hanalei Bay, Hanalei Valley and Princeville. Water sports and other activities abound in this locale. But every night we had the privilege of returning to the best vacation retreat house on the island, if not in the state! Honestly, it was difficult making a decision on whether to just 'hang out' there or be busy tourists. The accommodations were only surpassed by Mark's graciousness as a host. He was responsive, attentive and patient to all of our needs and questions. Thank you, Mark, for extending perfect 'aloha' to your guests! If you're looking for a unique and authentic 'real Hawaii' experience, this is your place. For the price, it's a real bargain! If you're looking for just another predictable upscale hotel, and a vacation spent with hundreds of other travelers, go to Princeville or Poipu. But I highly recommend that you skip the ridiculously pricey St. Regis and stay at River Estate. You can go enjoy a delicious lunch or some Plantation Iced Tea on the St. Regis balcony to say you've been there. I could write volumes on River Estate. My husband fell in love with the island and now has a particular affection for this place. He's trying to figure out how he can get transferred there for his work! If we had to live in Lihue, we'd still rent Mark's Guest House on the weekends! My starving college student son thought he had died and gone to heaven. My sixteen-year old son (who has a very critical eye and strong opinions) now uses River Estate as a measuring rod by which all other accommodations are evaluated. To date, none have measured up! And we're already making plans for a return trip next year. Again, thank you Mark, for helping an ex-patriot fulfill her dream. You really know how to spoil your guests and provide them much-needed rest and rejuvenation. You also know how to show them Hawaii living at its finest. Remembering your place and your hospitality gives us precious memories and something to look forward to. Mahalo!!

I have stayed in 4 & 5 star hotels before but this is much, much better! It is as clean and way more private. The home and land are beautiful and are as nice as the pictures.
Having your own house to return to after a day at the beach or hiking is a treat. You won't find yourself staring at a hotel TV while waiting for someone to get out of the bathroom... because you have your choice of a beautiful yard, a bedroom, a hot tub or deck or a wonderful living room to hang out instead.
Having a fully stocked kitchen and BBQ saved us a ton of money by not going out for breakfast and dinner every day (we spent it on scuba lessons and helicopter tours instead).

Immaculately clean properties, on the North shore of one of the greatest islands on Earth. And a f^ing spa tub on the lanai where you can see the river as you sip on your favorite cocktail after a long day of surfing!!! Man, I'm so sad that I can't go like once a month, but if you have the will and the means, Mark will take care of you and share his little slice of heaven with you. (Mark's the owner.)
My wife spent 10 days here a couple of weeks ago, and we wish we could have spent ten months instead...sigh...

When searching for where we would stay, my primary hope in renting a house was to be in the 'real' environment. I wanted to really see and hear Hawaii. This did exactly that.
The drive to the Guest House is down a long driveway lined with spectaluarly huge foliage, that I can only describe as prehistoric as I would imagine it. The sound of the rushing river just feet away from the house is soothing beyond belief. The sound of the frogs just after sunset lets you know you really are something tropical and amazing.
The house worked really well for us. We went with another couple and we each had 18 month olds. I worried about being some place that wasn't 'childproof' and my concerns vanished quickly. Though the house is raised up (I don't now what that is called there) and there are stairs to the front door, it was simple to block access for the kids to get outside. If we had wanted to leave the doors open, we knew a quick stop at Walmart for a baby gate for the stairs would have done the trick. Inside, there really wasn't anything they could get into. The only issue was the coffee table, but what child doesn't find a way to get hurt with a coffee table around?!
If you want secluded, tranquil, beautiful, peaceful, wonderful and waterfront, this is the place for you!

The River House is a wonderful place to stay on Kauai! We can't wait to return there. The listing description and pictures are very accurate. What you see at the website is what you get. On second thought--no it is not--it is even nicer than portrayed. The house is spotlessly clean and well maintained. The wood floors gleam. It is nicely and comfortably decorated. The kitchen is well equipped. We prepared most of our meals there and walked past the beautiful dining table to eat on the table on the lanai with the fantastic view of the river and all the beautiful trees and flowers. We picked our own grapefruit, tangelos, lime, and avocado. What a treat for us coming from a snowy climate. The spa on the lanai feels wonderful after a day of touring. The grill is nice and large enough for four. We all slept very well as the beds were quite comfortable.
The owner, Mark, was very helpful and I now call him a friend. He answered our questions about the area--especially where to snorkel and hike. He watched the weather and figured out the best times for us to do the activities we wanted. He made our bookings for a catamaran tour, helicopter tour, and luau. We were very well taken care of and everything went very seamlessly.
There is lots to do close by, but Kauai is small enough you can see all of it from your stay here. Or do nothing and enjoy the island ambience right there at the River House. It is located in a beautiful and quiet setting and it is nice to just sit back and enjoy the property.
Yes, we would definately recommend the River House to our friends and relatives. In fact, we already have. We can not wait to go back!

This visit marked my 8th year returning to River Estate (sometimes multiple times a year), and it just keeps getting better! Mark is a wonderful host and he thinks of everything you could need - if you don't see it, give him a call and he'll make it happen! Guest House was recently remodeled and it is worthy of a magazine spread - this is not a funky beach hut, but a sophisticated bungalow up in the trees that invites you to take off your slippahs Hawaiian style and make yourself at home. The setting is a secluded botanical garden alongside a bubbling stream with whispering bamboo a stones throw from some of the islands most beautiful beaches. This is truly island style living! Take advantage of the lovely kitchen and barbeque on the lanai to prepare a meal or two! Super private without feeling isolated, minutes from fabulous snorkeling beaches K'ee and Tunnels in one direction and the lovely Hanalei Town in the other direction. I have done a bit of traveling in my time and I have not stayed in a five star resort that can hold a candle to River Estate - this is experiencing Kauai the way it was meant to be experienced. If you have only stayed in hotels up to this point, you have a treat in store! River Estate is a gem and the value for the price can't be beat.
Marla has become a good friend and as a long time customer she was the first person who kept coming back year after year. As someone who has lived here for over 40 years there are things that are hard to see from the myopic perspective that I have in the sheltered environment of Kauai. Marla was one of the first to wake me up to how special my property really is from the outside looking in. Connecting with my guests has become part of my job and that job has become very very rewarding. Mahalo Marla for your longtime support!
