Additional Location Information

Hilo has many layers of history with a few grand buildings built in the heyday of the Sugar Plantations. It also has a quaint charm not found in the high dollar resort areas of Hawaii. 'The town that Time forgot' could be a great tag for Hilo since it has a weather worn, old look to it. There are small antique shops to browse and a Farmer's Market that is particularly interesting to see on market days (Wednesdays and Saturdays). Hilo's Sugar Cane days made it a melting pot of many cultures who made the labor force in the plantations. You will find influences of Japanese, Thai, Philipino, Mexican and Chinese flavors in the cuisine here as well as the local favorites ('Spam' and other dishes) loved by Hawaiians and those 'born and raised' here. Hilo now has a traditional 'tea house' with a modern flair in the next block, a Kava bar in a sunken garden and plenty of small affordable restaurants with a specialty cuisine close by. There are many little restaurants to discover as you grab a lunch or dinner. For those who don't want to spend any time in the kitchen, there are more than one or two favorite 'diners' for breakfast. Hilo is also a great vacation place for the gourmet cook since the Hilo Farmer's Market Hilo's setting right beside the bay means that there is a cooling trade wind even on the warmest day. Hilo's high levels of rainfall makes for lush green parks and gardens and you will see trees of many varieties standing tall.
