Splendid luxury at the bottom of the world - a special hide-away with the feel of a luxury, boutique hotel, without the hotel and triple the space! You can check out our reviews on Airbnb (recent reviews included at the foot of this listing).
Stay in a spacious, beautifully appointed, self-contained apartment in one of Australia’s most historic houses, formerly home to each Bishop of Tasmania for over 160 years until 2003. Our family home was built in the 1830s and is set in about an acre of gardens on one of Hobart’s most attractive tree-lined streets on the edge of Battery Point - just at the end of our street. And unlike Battery Point/other central areas, we have free parking outside!
Our 110 square metre apartment is at a secluded end of a 3 storey 10 bedroom family home and comprises 1 double bedroom and 1 twin-bedded room (can be a double on request) on the first floor, divided off and separate from the rest of the house. The twin-bedded room has a luxury ensuite shower room and there is an extra roll away trundle bed for a 5th person. In addition, there is a large lounge/dining room room and a sumptuous bathroom . The lounge/dining room with kitchenette has 30 square metres of beautiful dark polished original oak flooring and offers pleasant views across extensive gardens towards the Derwent River. Independent/dedicated access is through an attractive courtyard, separate entrance door and stairs.
Parking is easily available - free all day on the street outside which is empty all weekend and Mon-Fri by early evening (5pm ish) with 'back-up' offstreet parking if needed.
The apartment has been fitted out to the highest possible standard. The fully tiled bathroom features a deep, natural stone bath, a wide floor-ceiling glass walled shower, underfloor heating and fluffy towels from the White Company in London. The ensuite shower room is similarly fitted out. The apartment has hydronic heating, sound-proofing, draught-proofing and plenty of character. Heat is solar powered from a large scale solar array in the old orchard, supplemented by gas. And there's a hair dryer.
Cinema TV, iPad, Apple TV and Sonos hifi system with Spotify and Pandora unlimited music on demand are provided. The mini-kitchenette in the lounge room is equipped with a Fisher & Paykel single drawer dishwasher, bar fridge, microwave, kettle and coffee plunger (note: no cooking facilities). High quality beds, 200 thread Egyptian cotton bedding from London and plenty of good pillows.
Not a lot has changed in this house over the years, other than a major restoration project funded by the National Trust in the 1990s and now our efforts - especially heating! The house was designed in stages by two of Australia's most renowned architects in the 19th century, Henry Hunter and George Fagg. There are many stories about past owners, residents and guests including Field Marshall Montgomery of WW2 fame.
Bookings starting on a Thursday evening will usually only work for us if it includes the weekend as Friday is a very popular start date for weekend bookings. Between November and April, weekend bookings will be charged at the rate for 4 guests. No parties. Early check-in is often possible by prior arrangement.
Come and enjoy 21st century Hobart mixed with the 19th century!

Had a great stay at the Bishops Quarters. Spotlessly clean, well-appointed and within easy walking distance to cafes, restaurants and the Battery point area. Rebecca and Dermot were gracious hosts, and we wish them all the best with their further plans for this beautiful property.
Fantastic location and even better hosts. Rebecca and Dermot were very giving of their time and local knowledge. They even were happy for our little boy to play with their youngest daughter. Beautiful apartment and stunning bath. We will most definitely be back and looking forward to seeing all the new additions! Thanks for a friendly and relaxing stay.
Bishop's Quarters is amazing! My friends and I had a wonderful stay and we're most impressed by the views, the quality and care of the renovation of this historic building. The was immaculate and in a lovely neighbourhood. The hosts were lovely and communicative. I will be back for sure.
We had a lovely stay at the old bishop's quarters. It is a gorgeous, cosy property and we ended up staying in most nights to eat dinner in the apartment. It's in a great location, on one of the grandest streets in Hobart, easy walking distance to the centre of town and salamanca/battery point areas. The furnishings and beds are beautiful and the shower is amazing! Dermot and Bec were great hosts and were willing to help and give suggestions about our visit. I definitely recommend, so much better than any hotel and much better value!...Read more
