About Hood River

Known as the windsurfing and kiteboarding capital of America, Hood River is loved by adrenaline-sports fans, foodies and those who could spend days researching history (there are so many quirky museums here!). There are also beautiful gorges complete with wonderful waterfalls.

See them all while staying in a FlipKey vacation rental - it's the best way to travel!

About Hood River

Sitting on the Columbia River and named after nearby Hood River (once known as Dog River), this city is a huge magnet for adrenaline-junkies. They come in their droves to experience the high of kite surfing, white water rafting, mountain biking, kayaking and skiing. And, sitting just 30 miles from Mount Hood, it's also a mecca for trekkers and bird of prey lovers.

There's a post office downtown dating back to 1858, but Hood River wasn't declared a city until 1985. Formerly a logging town, today it makes its money from the food and drink industry (and tourism, of course). That's because the area is famous for its apple, pear and cherry harvests, as well as its wineries, vineyards and ever-growing number of craft breweries.

If you're not yet impressed, a recent poll voted Hood River one of the top 11 Great Riverfront Towns in America. So you really should go check it out!

What to do in Hood River

Try out a little local culinary culture at the Hood River Hops Fest and the Hood River Valley Harvest Fest—both held in October every year.

Hire a mountain bike and head for Post Canyon. Sitting South West of the Hood River, it's perfectly suited for freewheeling beginners. There are two parking areas, both just 10 minutes’ drive from the city.

Amuse yourself at the International Museum of Carousel Art. It has the biggest collection of carnival memorabilia in the world, including a complete 1914 carousel and Wurlitzer band organ.

Go trekking through the Columbia Gorge where you'll find waterfalls, scenic mountainsides and lush, green forests. You may even be lucky enough to spot an osprey or eagle.

Go cruising the waves on a blow-up boat when water rafting on White Salmon River. Paddle your way round famous obstacles with names such as Corkscrew, Rattlesnake and Deadman’s Corner.

Top travel tips for Hood River

Get there by train via Amtrak to Bingen in Washington. It sits across the Columbia River from the city. You can also get a flight to Portland International Airport (just 60 miles away) and hire a rental car.

The weather in Oregon can get extreme during the winter, with ice on the roads making driving hazardous. The main road, interstate 84, can often be closed during this time.

Fall is the nicest time of the year to visit if you're a sucker for scenic views, since the maple and aspen trees turn a beautiful shade of red and gold then.

Windsurfing, wineries, bizarre museums—it seems there's something for all personality types here at Hood River. Whether visiting during summer or winter there's always some sort of festival going on, too. Make sure you don't miss out on this top tourist spot by booking your vacation home today with FlipKey. From cabins to luxury houses, you can rent the perfect place to stay by starting your search, today!
