The town of Incisa Scapaccino, literally “incised” between the torrent Belbo, is so called in memory of Giovanni Battista Scapaccino, Carabineer, first gold medal of the Italian Army.
Located in the middle of the gentle hills of Monferrato, just 4 km away from the town of Nizza Monferrato and 10 km from Canelli (city of wine), it is in the southern province of Asti, almost equidistant from the centers of Asti (medieval town where every third Sunday of September the “Palio”, race horse with jockeys between the various districts, is run), Alessandria (set in the centre of the triangle “Torino-Milano-Genova” is an important motorway and railway junction for the 3 cities), Acqui Terme (roman and spa town famous for its healthy and sulphurous waters) and Alba (set in the heart of the hills of Langhe, is famous for its white truffle whose fair takes place in the month of October).
It is divided into “Borghi”, among which the ancient “Borgo Villa” deserves mention for its medieval origins still evident, as Carmine Church (former Convent), and San Giovanni Battista Church, under restructuring, which is becoming Sanctuary of the Carabineers Service by late 2012 (in memory of Giovanni Battista Scapaccino), where the “Virgo Fidelis Madonna”, heavenly Patroness of the Carabineers, will be venerated.
Here, in Borgo Villa, on the second Saturday of July, the historical commemoration named “Incisa 1514” takes place: this is a folkloristic feast in medieval costumes with food and wine tasting.
On the 16th of August there is the traditional Turkey Fair in Borgo Madonna, and on the second Sunday of October the Festival of the “Barbera” wine and the “Bent cardoon” in Borgo Ghiare with the tasting of the typical “bagna cauda”.
