Additional notes from the owner
During the high season on Vieques, demand often outweighs the supply of available rental cars on the island. If rental cars are not booked in advance during the busy season, it is very difficult to find a vehicle for rent. Pura Vida has a SUV exclusively available for the use of our guests. If you shall choose to stay at Pura Vida, a SUV will be available for your use if you choose to rent it.
We have a 2007 Dodge Durango for the exclusive use of our guests. Not many rental vehicles on Vieques can hold more than 5 passengers. Our SUV has three rows of seats holding 8 passengers. If you are a larger group staying at Pura Vida, an 8 passenger SUV negates the need to rent two vehicles, you can fit everyone in one vehicle, thus saving you money on both rental fees, gas etc. During the winter months which are High Season on Vieques, rental cars are often nonexistent, as there is more demand than cars available. Our SUV is for the exclusive use of our guests and will be available if you shall choose to rent it. We also have a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee, if you have a need of two vehicles, we can possibly arrange both vehicles during your stay, just ask.
Additional fees may apply:
- SUV - Dodge Durango | 60 USD per day

My Wife and I honeymooned to PuraVida. Our stay was wonderful! Everything that we possibly could have needed was supplied for Us. From towels to beach chairs to coolers, we were very impressed. We went To Vieques with the plan of relaxing and being beach bums. The Island and the home completely allowed us to do so. We visited different beaches everyday, all in very close proximity to PuraVida. Convenient location to the malecon allowed us to walk to dinner and drinks everynight without worry of driving or not feeling safe. PuraVida was clean and well kept, the caretakers did a good job of making us feel at home and answering any questions that we had. My wife and I will definitely be returning to PuraVida with the plan of doing the exact same thing(relaxing) I would highly recommend PuraVida to anyone looking to do the same! The BioBay trip was something that everyone must truly experience, words can't describe what it's like. The fact that Jeff and Michelle provide your stay with the option of a vehicle is what made this trip special...we were able to get around the island at our own leisure. An SUV is a must on the island for some of the beaches roads were quite rough and washed out. The people of Vieques were all very friendly and we didn't have any bad experiences with anyone while we were there. We went out for dinner everynight and went to Duffys more then once! All in all we were happy with dinners at all places we went, thanks to Joe and Mimi the caretakers. They gave us very good direction and recommendations to good times! We will be returning for anniversary trips and can't wait to take our children and family to see what the Island has to experience. Thanks Jeff and Michelle, I have told many people about our stay, and directed them to your very well organized website!!!
“Home away from home in beautiful Vieques, PR”
Pura Vida provided us a true home away from home experience during our visit to Vieques. For all who stay there, before the trip, Jeff and Michelle send you an awesome welcome packet that answers any questions you might have starting from when you land in Puerto Rico to when you leave- it's an invaluable resource that personally came in handy when we changed some of our transportation plans just before we left on our trip. Once you get to Pura Vida, you have the additional resource in Joe and Mimi Popp, the caretakers for Pura Vida- they can answer any remaining questions and provide great advice on beaches, restaurants, activities, etc. Pura Vida was a great set-up for our family of 6- you have everything you need to make meals at home but you are also close enough to walk to the waterfront in the cute town of Esperanza for a great meal with a phenomenal view. Pura Vida has some really great amenities. Though we didn't need it as our kids are older, there is plenty of baby gear for those with young children. And although there is no satellite t.v. we didn't even miss it due to the amazing DVD collection as well as board games and a selection of books. The best amenity is the option of renting their SUV along with the house- to fully appreciate Vieques, you need a car to get to most of the beaches and with our large family, it was great not having to worry about getting a car big enough from a rental company. If you have a large group or family, I highly recommend a stay at Pura Vida- it ticks all the boxes for being a home away from home with the additional perk of the great service from the Blandings and the Popps. As for the roosters- as everyone has said, you don't even hear them with the air-conditioning going. Until the time comes that we are able to buy our own vacation home on amazing Vieques, Pura Vida will be our choice for our home away from home.

Thank you Irwin's for your honest and complimentary review. I am sure other potential renters will appreciate your comments as well. We try and keep the Welcome Guide continually updated, because you never know when Island Time can strike. Whenever you return to Vieques, we are happy to host you! Good luck in your house hunting trip!
“Cant wait to go back!”
This was our second time staying at Pura Vida in Vieques and all I can think about is "when can we go back"? Its a perfect location and short walk from the restaurants in Esperanza. No need to worry about driving or parking if you want to go to dinner, for drinks, or to meet a guide for abe's Tours. Banana's has really good banana and mango coladas and I was told by my friends that Duffy's has great fish tacos (I dont eat fish). If you have never had them you must try Tostones (fried plantains). Depending on the season you can also see awesome sunsets over the Ocean from the Malecon in Esperanza. We took advantage of the SUV offered by Pura Vida, which made it easy to come and go to any of the beaches on the island. We did have quite a bit of rain during this visit to the island, but unlike those who took taxis to the beach, we could pack up and head back to Pura Vida for drinks on the porch while we waited on the storms before heading back. The first time we visited the island and stayed at Pura Vida it was just my fiance and I. This time we brought another couple who we knew would enjoy a relaxing low key non touristy beach vacation and next month my cousin and his new wife will get to share the experience when they stay at Pura Vida for their honeymoon. My final recommendations: 50 SPF sunscreen, the sun is much stronger in that area Bug spray, there are mosquitoes abe's Tours - Bio Bay is a must

Thank you Chrissy for the honest review and kind words about Pura Vida. We agree, one of our many benefits of Pura Vida is our location. If you are in a group of people and some want to walk to dinner or drinks (or stumble home early), it is easy to do so since we are so close to the Malecon. However, we are in somewhat of a secluded street so you do not get much traffic or noise from the Malecon. Practice the 2 medalla rule at the beach, every 2 Medalla apply SPF50
“Our favority vacation spot =)”
This trip marked our second visit to Vieques, as well as our second stay at Pura Vida. The upgrades include a new SUV for traversing the bumpy roads to secluded beaches and a beautiful new kitchen! While the island has certainly been discovered in the last few years, there are still plenty of beaches to explore and most you will still find yourself alone for a good portion of the day. The Bio Bay was even more brilliant than we remembered. You are no longer allowed to swim in it but abe's Snorkeling hosted a wonderful kayak tour that was just as enjoyable (perhaps more so since there were no jellyfish stings!). I would recommend Vieques and Pura Vida to anyone (in fact, I always do!), and we'll be back next year for another relaxing week in the sun!

Thank you for the glowing reply, we are so glad you enjoyed your vacation and delighted we could be a part of it. Whenever you wish to return to Vieques, we will be glad to host you again. Thank you again! Jeff
“Relaxing, relaxing, relaxing!”
This was my third year vacationing at Pura Vida and I cannot wait until next year to come again! Viequez offers everything that I want in a vacation and Pura Vida is the perfect location for relaxing, fun, and feeling like you are in your "home away from home". Within walking distance to the malecon - fun, shopping, and authentic Puerto Rican food, its a wonderful way to transition off the beach.
“The perfect get away!”
This was our 4th trip to Vieques and PuraVida. Each year, 5 girlfriends get together to escape " the real world" and gain some peace and a new perspective on life. We couldn't ask for a better place to have this happen. PuraVida is quaint and charming, yet offers all of the amenities needed for the perfect vacation. A day at the beach, a quick shower, and a walk to the Malecon for drinks and a fabulous dinner...what more could we ask for? Jeff and Michelle, the owners, are continually making improvements to the property to enhance your stay. This year when we arrived, they had replaced the jeep with a 7 passenger vehicle, making the trip to the beach much more comfortable. The caretakers of the property, Joe and Mimi, are a wealth of info, so be sure to call upon their expertise for ideas of where to go, what to see, etc. The one thing people seem to consider a draw back is the rooster population. Well, they are part of the Puerto Rican culture, and should be looked at as such. After the first day, you really don't even notice them. But, if you do, rest assured...there are sound machines and ear plugs in the bedrooms! Let me conclude by saying that if you're looking for a resort vacation, Vieques is not the place to go. However, if you're up for pure relaxation and enjoyment, in a beautiful location, book your trip to Vieques and PuraVida asap!!! Thanks Jeff and Michelle for the use of your home, and all of the wonderful memories!!! Can't wait to return next year!!!

“lazy week in vieques”
spent one lazy week at pura vida. mornings at the beach, afternoons at the house napping and reading. the house is very well located, easy walk to wonderful restaurants, perfect for lunch and dinner. the house was clean, airy and well equipped with air conditioners in each bedroom, flat screen TV (no cable or tv reception but many fine movies to watch). can't not mention the roosters in the neighborhood, something you hear through out the town. the air conditioners totally drown out the noise at night, they are quiet in the early evening, you just have to deal with them in the morning and afternoon. we just decided it was part of the local scene and didn't dwell on it. we are going back next year, the beaches are so deserted, the water so blue, the natives very friendly the food so wonderful, why wouldn't we return?? we were greeted by the house managers, given wonderful tips on restaurants, best beaches, grocery stores etc. we found them very helpful and friendly. we have traveled all over the world, rented house in many countries, we consider every trip an adventure, it's never going to be just like home, if you want a sanitized vacation, stay at a resort. if you want to feel like you live in a neighborhood,if you want to experience a different culture, you are up for an adventure, this is the place for you. try all the restaurants on the malecon, we are foodies, we din't have one bad meal.

My wife and I stayed at Pura Vida for our honeymoon and it was superb. The cozy house was located conveniently close to the beach and the boardwalk in Esperanza. We would get up every morning, take a short stroll down to the boardwalk, and enjoy the most phenomenal breakfast at Bellybuttons and watch the sun rise! We used the vehicle that was available to ride to any of the incredible beaches on the island - our favorite being Navio for all the body surfing, but all of them were beautiful. Every night we enjoyed the open-front bars, especially Bananas - their margaritas were the best! We shopped along the boardwalk and enjoyed the authentic music. And it was nice to come back to the house at the end of the day and enjoy the clean, roomy house to relax in after all that exhausting sunbathing! There was a kitchen to cook in if we were too tired to eat out, and a washer and dryer to clean our towels and clothes. All in all, I would have to recommend Pura Vida as it made our honeymoon an amazing experience we won't soon forget!
“Our most relaxxing and enjoyable vacation ever!”
My wife and I spent an unforgettable week in Pura Vida. It was so relaxing from the moment we arrived. This home is located in the quiet little town of Esperanza, one block for the Malecon (a local term for waterfront). Each evening we would wonder down to the Malecon, grab a drink from a local vendor and then have dinner at different restaurant while watching the sun set over the ocean. During the day we would jump in the car that we rented with the house and either explored the enchanting island of Viegues, or visit one of the many secluded pristine beaches! I have been snorkeling all over the world and around the Caribbean, this was some of the best water that I can remember. It was truly paradise and I would strongly recommend to anyone who wants to get away! The house was wonderful, the local folks and care taker where very helpful and friendly. Pura Vida 7 is one of the most cost effective relaxing vacations there is. I almost want to keep this a secret!

“Looking forward to our next stay!”
My husband and I stayed at Pura Vida for our Honeymoon and were instantly amazed at the beauty of the island. The caretakers, Joe and Mimi, were so helpful and friendly. Joe took the time to give us the inside scoop of the island. He was a wonderful host and loves the Island. He is full of info and recommendations to make your stay a pleasure. Pura Vida is located within walking distance of a variety of restaurants and bars within Esperanza that offer to a taste of the island's unique culture. I happened to be several weeks pregnant, therefore I was never able to enjoy that famous Puerto Rican rum. Next time! If you do choose to venture away from the cozy quarters at Pura Vida, they offer the use of their vehicles. This comes in very handy for traveling to the many different beaches. Sometimes my husband and I were the only ones on the beach! They are just amazing. We also loved the wild horses. We wanted to enjoy the unique BioBay, but morning sickness got the best of me towards the end of our stay. We most definitely will be experiencing it on our next trip. We would absolutely recommend Pura Vida. The house was very clean, cozy and accommodating. Jeff and Michelle provide you with everything that you would need for a relaxing and enjoyable vacation. We plan on visiting again soon after our son is born, and bringing along some friends for the fun!
