The building has been lovingly restored over a period of five years from an abandoned ruin into a relaxing and tranquil retreat. Great care and thought has been put into the refurbishment and decoration of this lovely house with a healthy respect given to the simple vernacular architecture of the original building.
The house wraps itself around a traditional 'Cordoba style' inner courtyard (patio) with a wishing well & with two shaded open air dining areas .Plants and pots of flowers cascading from balconies & around the walls. Seperate entrances to each side of the house , linked by the central courtyard. This is ideal for families who want to be together but retain some privacy !
There are 5 good sized bedrooms : 1 with a king size bed on the ground floor level & with en suite bathroom,1 with superking size bed ( which can be split into 2 singles if preferred )1 with twin beds, ( which can be joined into a superking size bed if preferred ) 2 with double beds. The upper floors have a bathroom in the middle of each of the two bedrooms. ( all rooms have an uninterrupted view of either lake or mountains ) There is a characterful open style living room and a separate dining area attached to a fully equipped handmade farmhouse style kitchen. Both with a cosy wood burning stoves for those cooler evenings (from November through to April). The solid 3 foot thick stone walls keep the house deliciously cool in the hot Spanish summers. There are wooden shutters at all windows for the same reason.
There is plenty of outside garden space too - both sunny and shaded areas for relaxing or for dining ' al fresco' .
We have a traditional gas barbeque in the courtyard and also a large size wood burning barbeque on the sun terrace for that 'true outdoor eating' experience ! There is a large table with enough space for ten people under a parasol.
Enjoy the 'Desert Oasis' style swimming pool and a sunbathing area with comfortable sunbeds and parasols.
The gardens are designed to give full advantage of the views and to blend in with the olive groves. Locally quarried stone is used to give a natural feel to both the pool area and the pathways. The landscaping uses indigenous drought resistant plants, trees & shrubs throughout. The old mule paths make for a lovely, easy walking excursion and you have free access to the olive groves all the way down to the lakeside.
After a days sightseeing this is the most ideal spot to in which to unwind in - just imagine it ............sipping a drink on the terrace, overlooking the lake and enjoying the gentle cooling breezes which blow from the waters of the lake !
Every effort is made to reduce our carbon footprint & save energy, utilising the energy from the sun, we have installed equipment to produce both our own electricity and our hot water supply. A new well brings clear refreshing water up to the house from the natural springs that run under the mountain. Thermals from the lake create cooling breezes which ensure a very pleasant temperature, both inside and outside of the house

Additional Location Information
Cortijo Dona Constanza ( Lady Constanzas Farm ) was built 200 years ago by an eminent surgeon from Granada who wanted to take full advantage of the cooling breezes which flow up the valley to this magnificent location. It was said by the locals that this fresh mountain air had special healing qualities for people suffering from respiratory illnesses. His wife (Dona Constanza) , who was of a delicate disposition, was helped greatly by the climate here in Rute.
Today the farm has been tastefully rebuilt and refurbished to the highest standards. All modern conveniences have been installed, including WIFI broadband connection. The views are incredible and with no close by neighbours , it is very tranquil and private - ideal for those wishing to relax and unwind without anyone overlooking the house. The grounds and gardens are extensive and there is enough space for ten people to spread themselves around the place !
The nearby town of Rute - only 2 km away - has all of the amenities one would need : supermarkets, pharmacies, medical centre with 24 hour emergency service, bars and restaurants, churches and a host of interesting things to visit. The locals are very helpful and kind and are always interested to talk to visitors to the area. The Subbetica mountain range is great for cycling, rock climbing, horse and donkey riding, bird and wildlife watching, walking and eco turism - we can arrange all of these for you - with equipment and guides if you so wish. We stayed at Dona Constanza for 1 week in May. On arrival our expectations were exceeded. The views are absolutely stunning, with the panorama stretching from the snow capped mountains of the Sierra Nevada to the east, lush olive groves surrounding the property and extending to the shores of a lake to the south, and the rolling hills of Andalucía to the west. The accommodation comprises of a self contained holiday cottage attached to the main house, surrounding a central walled courtyard. Our host had left us a generous welcome pack, comprising of all the essentials needed to start a self catering holiday. The cottage we stayed in comprised of a traditional kitchen and dining area, with a stone stair case leading to the bedrooms and bathrooms with bidet and shower. All the rooms are of a good size and the word cottage belies the size and grandeur of this place, with vaulted ceilings and shuttered windows, affording picturesque views across the valley and lake below. We were pleasantly surprised by how helpful our host was in advising us of places of interest throughout the region, even supplying us with leaflets and maps, along with personal recommendations of local attractions and eateries. I should point out that having your own car is absolutely essential to fully appreciate the area. Also Constanza is approximately 1 mile from the nearest town Rute, reached via a private road/track through the olive groves, which is the norm in this area of Spain. The surrounding areas around the house include a terrace, several seating areas with sun loungers and a dipping pool. Overall a relaxing and pleasant place to stay.
Thank you for your much appreciated review ! We enjoyed having you here and were pleased that you felt it was a good choice of holiday home. We look forward to welcoming you here again in the near future as you said you would be back soon ! Murri & Peter
