Three miles outside of Jackson, on a winding country road, a ranch gate marked by two bugling elk heralds a very special property: On The Elk Refuge, a jewel among Jackson Hole luxury vacation rentals. Set, as its name implies, on the very grounds of the National Elk Refuge, it is a big, open house, built all on one level, in the simple, pared down style of National Park buildings, trim painted in classic camp-green. The property’s spreading private acreage is surrounded by a buck rail fence. Great herds of elk cross the wide grasslands on the other side. The huge, jagged Tetons reign silent over all.
The exterior simplicity of On The Elk Refuge is deceptive - for inside, all is richness and color, texture and comfort, excellence of design. Monumental windows accommodate the monumental views. The great room, in the center of the house, is truly great. Long leather couches look out to the breath-taking panorama outside; huge peeled tree trunks support the peaked ceiling.
The dining area, kitchen and breakfast table all fall under the auspices of the great room, each space open to the next and warmed by the beautiful river rock fireplace. The gleaming wood floors, the burnished red-gold of the log walls, the antler chandeliers, the clear changing blues of the sky-filled windows, the bright throw rugs and flowers: all combine to create a home so graceful, hospitable and warm that you might well want to stay forever.
On The Elk Refuge’s wide decks function as a second great room in good weather. A Weber gas grill, a gathering of forest-green Adirondack chairs, a hot tub big enough for a crowd – and, just steps away on the front lawn, a cast-iron fire pit, encircled by tree-trunk stools. All, of course, with a vast and heavenly view. Moon and stars sail slowly over the mountains; owls and coyotes call across the plain. Each sunrise is a new and thrilling thing.
A few steps off the kitchen is the family room: a media center, a bar, a hang-out spot; the place for parties, family game tournaments or pizza and movie night. Ample leather armchairs and couches provide plenty of space to kick back. With a fire in the fireplace, a film on the wide TV, music playing on the distributed audio system and drinks on tap at the bar, the family room gets plenty of use. On The Elk Refuge also has a full complement of games, movies, books and music to enjoy. Well-behaved pets will be considered at the house.
The master suite is located at the southwest end of the house, in a wing of its own near the family room. A king size bed waits a few steps up in a raised portion of the room; and a TV is mounted on the wall facing the bed for late night news or movies. A big sitting area with two love seats and two comfortable armchairs stands before French doors and a wide private deck. There is a spacious, walk-in closet. In the private bathroom, a giant soaking tub stands next to a big, walk-in shower. Double sinks are set in a long stone-topped vanity.
On The Elk Refuge has a wonderful, fire-lit office off of the Great Room that can be quickly and easily converted to another guest bedroom if needed. A fold-out leather couch faces the wood-burning fire; a desk, not pictured, is bordered on both sides by floor-to-ceiling bookcases.
There are five guest bedrooms at On The Elk Refuge, each with its own comforts and joys. Most of the bedrooms share large bathrooms and closets, which open off the hallway. Bedroom one has queen-size log bed, a door to the front deck and a bathroom shared with the family room. The Junior Master has a king bed, a small TV, and a private full bath.
Guest bedrooms two and three are charming, carpeted rooms, perfect for children, teens or anyone, really. Views from the windows frame the foothills of the Gros Ventre Range. Bedroom three has two twin beds standing side-by-side. It shares a bathroom with bedroom four, which can be a private room for one, or, with the trundle bed pulled out, can sleep two. Finally, bedroom four, also carpeted, has a queen bed and windows on two sides.
Outside On The Elk Refuge, the giant adventure of Jackson Hole awaits. Continue down the drive a ways and you’ll hit the Gros Ventre Wilderness. There are a number of campsites and trails to explore; this area is where the locals come, for the jaw-dropping vistas and the off-the-beaten-path atmosphere. Skiing, hiking, fly fishing, trail riding, hot air ballooning… anything and everything is possible nearby. Your Clear Creek Group concierge will be happy to arrange special, on-property experiences for you as well: a private chef to prepare a feast for a family celebration, a couple’s massage before the fire in the great room, perhaps a surprise visit from Santa on Christmas Eve or a sleigh ride through the snowy woods. Your Jackson Hole vacation, and your stay in wonderful On The Elk Refuge, will be an unforgettable time.TripAdvisor property ID 1826526...Read more
