“Spectacular House on the Water You Won't Want to Leave”
We held our family vacation at Hale Honu with nine adults and teenagers from two families. We used both the upstairs and the studio which provided a bit of separation for the older teenagers. We had read about the ocean views at Hale Hanu and we weren't disappointed! Hale Hanu is on a slight point in the coastline, providing an excellent vista. We toured up and down the Kona coast and never found a better place to sit and watch the ocean making us wonder why we ever left! Perhaps it was because we were there so close to the winter solstice, but the view from the hot tub was straight toward the sunset and perfectly framed by two palm trees! It couldn't have been a better hot tub view if it were in a postcard. We also appreciated the binoculars provided in each unit. There were daily sightings of dolphins, whales, and sea turtles. The house was well stocked with comfortable furniture, towels, and beach gear (even new boogie boards). The owners were available any time we had a question and some confusion we had with the trash service was cleared up immediately. The beds were very comfortable. The only thing we needed to get accustom to was the all night roar of the surf but once adjusted it became a wonderful sonic dimension of this relaxing home. Now I hear the surf every time I think about the place. The location was convenient for going into Kailua-Kona, local beaches, or the grocery store.

“Hale Honu 2 week stay”
We have just arrived home from 2 weeks at the Hale Honu house. I must say Peter and Darla are accommodating and easy to deal with. We loved the location of the house and you cannot get any closer to the water. We rented a vehicle and mopeds as there is not a store close by, which is exactly what we wanted. We loved the crashing surf and were mesmerized by it every moment and found it did not bother us at night but be aware that it is not a quiet lapping shoreline if that is what your looking for. You will not find this anywhere in this area of Kona if you want to be close to the water. The only negative we found was that the lanai furniture and cushions were well used and "tired". For the money we also would have appreciated good pillows and nicer sheets. The beds were very comfortable. The 2nd bedroom needs screens replaced as moths seemed to get in easily.

Aloha Rick and Donna, Mahalo for your choice of Hale Honu and your feedback. We're getting new lanai furniture pads for the upstairs based on your observation. All of the loungers along the sea wall have almost new full length pads. We purchased new bed linens for Hale Honu in June and October of 2013. We provide a choice of down or foam pillows for every bed at Hale Honu. We'll contact our housekeeper to assess the linen condition as we are not returning to Kona until April. We own the Hawaiian Oasis Estate Bed and Breakfast in Kona and can always address these kinds of issues at anytime during your stay. We're happy to change out pillows and linens for guests if they are unsatisfied and we know about it.
“Kona oceanfront paradise”
Hale Honu, House of the Turtle. Right on the Pacific Ocean on the west coast of the Big Island of Hawaii, about 3 miles south of Kona. Five of us stayed on the top floor in 2 large and one small bedroom. The photos representing the accommodations on Trip advisor and Vrbo web sites are very accurate. Communication with the owners was very straightforward by email, and overall the value for what we paid was excellent. Our relaxation highlight was a large open porch right above the ocean from where we enjoyed Green Turtles and Yellow Tang swimming in the clear water below. Out in the ocean, usually less than a mile offshore, Humpback Whales were seen everyday, often breaching. In the beginning it was too rough to snorkel, but toward the end of our stay we got several days of excellent snorkeling, and saw several turtles underwater, as well as a great number and variety of tropical reef fish as far as creature comfort, the two large bedrooms both had magnificent ocean views. The beds had new firm mattresses, the two bathrooms were clean and well equipped, the kitchen was very well furnished with pots and pans, utensils, plates, salt, pepper and spices, cups and glasses, which even included very nice wine glasses. The refrigerator was new and large, easily holding three or more six packs of beer. The stove was also new and large. There were guests in the smaller first floor apartment, but we rarely saw them, and never heard them. The property is gated, so we always felt very secure.
“Nine Days in Paradise”
My husband and I just returned from our spectacular vacation at the Hale Honu Studio. When we drove up and saw our view, our jaws almost hit the ground. I was giddy with excitement. Picture This: You are lying on a hammock under a coconut tree smelling the clean, salty air. Straight ahead you are looking at gorgeous shades of turquoise colored water with foamy white waves. Just below the patio, you watch turtles and brilliantly colored fish swimming in the clear water near the rocks. It's like snorkeling on dry land. Every few days we watched dolphins swim by leaping into the air with what appeared to be pure joy. It was hard for us to leave the studio each morning because we were so enchanted by the view. We found Peter, the owner, to be extremely helpful and very generous. He truly embodies the aloha spirit. His written suggestions of beaches, restaurants, places to see, etc. were excellent and saved us a lot of time. One of his suggestions was to eat at the Original Thai Restaurant and we thought that it was fabulous! There are some beautiful beaches very close to Hale Honu. Just a short walk, there is a really fun boogie boarding beach. The water feels amazing! Then down about a mile is a superb snorkeling beach. It was like swimming in an aquarium! Then about a half an hour away is 2 Step beach. Don't miss this...the snorkeling is sensational. It's as good as Captain Cook, but so much easier to get there. If you like coffee, go up country to the coffee plantations and go coffee tasting. We had a great time doing that. It's very lush and a beautiful drive. I recommend taking the coffee "cherry" tour at Greenwell Farm. They do a really nice job. After a good day of exploring, go back to the studio in time for the exquisite sunsets. They are gorgeous! I cannot sing enough praises for our experiences at the studio and our daily adventures. If you want a romantic get-a-way, this is definitely the place. I hope you enjoy your stay at Hale Honu as much as we did.

“It made my vacation”
The turtles just out front, the spinner dolphins swimming by everyday and the accommodations, a trifecta if there ever was one! You won't want for anything. Spices for every meal, snorkel equipment for the whole family and location, location, location! Near town but not too close and only steps away from the turtles. The jacuzzi at sunset unbeatable.
My husband, my son, his wife, their two children, 3yrs & 5 yrs, plus her mother all stayed at the Green Turtle together in august 2013. The house was very clean and quaint. We rented the entire house and had ample room. The house has a magnificent view because it is right on the water and very secure. The little ones enjoy the beach next door to the house, and the adults were able to swim with sea turtle on the other side of the house. We would definitely choose this house again.

Aloha Virginia, We're delighted that Hale Honu, the "Home of the Sea Turtle" was perfect for your family. We look forward to hosting you again when you return to Kona! Darla and Peter
“Heaven on earth”
My family and I spent 10 wonderful days at hale Honu. There are no words to express how beautiful this home is. The views could never be duplicated! It feels like you have the ocean to yourself. The home has everything you need and much more! Everyday we saw something magical, from spinner dolphins to sea turtles. I would recommend this home to everyone. It was so sad to leave, I hope to return one day and would absolutety stay at hale Honu!!!

“If You Don't Know about Hale Honu Then You Need To Know about Th”
A nice beginning. The lights were on, the gate was open and beautiful floral arrangements were being delivered. A large bowl of produce from the farmers market was there to be savored. The whole house was available for our 11 family members to enjoy for 2 weeks this Feb. 2013 and worked perfectly. The lani was a great place to start the day with a cup of Kona coffee. We watched for whales, dolphins, sea turtles, long outrigger canoes and bright yellow fish swimming below. The living room had plenty of space for family time and a good place to go over plans for the day. The updated kitchen had a very large refrigerator, and everything we could possibly need, including space, to prepare all our wants. Adjoining Pahoehoe Beach was a good place for experienced snorkels to enter, very small children to play at the water's edge, and the beach had treasures to find and a sea turtle to watch. 2 blocks away White Sands beach filled the boogie board niche.Plenty of boogie boards among the toys at Hale Honu. 1.5 miles and Kahaluu Beach had easy entry, lots of fish and calm waters. The first week we went farther along the coast. The second week we realized it was all close by to enjoy to our hearts content. Farmer's Markets, shops and more shops kept us gleefully occupied. A visit to a chocolate farm, seeing flowing lava, ocean fishing, helicopter rides a visit to Pearl Harbor all helped keep us as busy or relaxed as we chose. Walking over the beautiful bamboo floor, opening the 10 ft. window, hearing the surf and clunking lava boulders and into a comfortable bed ended a perfect day. The house was impeccable, nice antiques, 3 great bathrooms, plenty of linens and beach towels, good water, nice landscaping, great breezes and views to rival any. Peter and Darla were easy to work with, quick to respond to questions, very accommodating and had lots of good information to share We hope to get back soon to Hale Honu.
“Awesome!! Hale Honu”
The wonderful beach home, Hale Honu, on ali'i Drive south of Kona, lived up to, and exceeded, all of our families' expectations. Hale Honu itself easily accommodated our extended family, providing plenty of gathering space for the eleven of us, but also some of our "own space" for each of the three individual families. Whales, spinner dolphins, and sea turtles were viewed from the house as well as beautiful sunsets. The large bedroom windows open wide to let the sound of the crashing surf fill the room and put you to sleep. The boys enjoyed sleeping outside on the lanai every night. Snorkeling was excellent right at the ocean in front of Hale Honu. Pahoehoe Beach, immediately adjacent to the house, made for an easy access point in which to enter the water to see an amazing array of colorful fish. Sea turtles were also encountered during most every snorkeling outing. On one occasion, my two sons and I were thrilled to spend as long as we wanted watching a large manta ray. We would also take the very short walk south on ali'i Drive to White Sands Beach. There the adventurous ones enjoyed body surfing and using the wake boards (provided there at Hale Honu). Located between Pahoehoe Beach and White Sands Beach is an upscale restaurant, Anthony's by the Sea. My wife and I left the kids at Hale Honu, took the short beach side stroll to the restaurant, and had a most exquisite and romantic meal together at a small table for two right along the restaurant's sea wall. All in all, a fantastic trip, due in large part to the location, and quality of accommodations at Hale Honu, on the Big Island. A relaxing, refreshing and enjoyable visit, it provided us with fond memories.
“Slice of paradise for our three generation family.”
Our family was lucky enough to spend 10 beautiful days in Hale Honu in late January. There were 9 of us including three generations. A family with young children, grandparents, 20 yr olds and us middle agers. We used the whole house. Both units were lovely, clean and comfortable, with everything you might need for a great vacation. The bookshelves were stocked. My brother who is a professional cook loved the very well equipped kitchen. There was plenty towels, and beach gear to use We loved spotting whales, dolphins, fish and turtles right from the lanai or from the fantastic hot tub, we watched for the "green flash" at sunset, and actually saw it twice! On calm days we were able to get into the water right in front of the house for amazing snorkeling. Swimming with turtles in front of the house was thrilling. The location is great, with Kona town right down the road. There are great beaches very close by in all directions. We were able to take an easy day trip to Hilo and Volcano National Park on the other side of the island. We also loved watching the yoga classes and local hula classes in the little park next door from the lanai. The owners were very accessible and always helpful before and during our stay. We were provided with lots of helpful information about directions, local eateries, shopping, nearby activities that really helped us to have a great time. Hale Honu is really an incredible slice of paradise and I would be thrilled to stay here again if we are lucky enough to be able to return. I would definitely recommend this house without reservation. I did stay in the downstairs apartment. What a sweet space. You can lie in bed and see the ocean. The suite is lovely, well equipped and a perfect little romantic space. We had the whole house, but it is set up to provide privacy to the apartment when another group is renting the upstairs space.
