Kestrel Downs - A Unique Experience - Sea & Nature
Kestrel Downs is a tranquil, light-filled island retreat with free WiFi.
A unique island property - this secluded coastal haven offers both close proximity to pristine beaches and also the opportunity to share the natural habitat of Kangaroo Island's native birds and animals.
Settled lightly on the landscape, on 40 private hectares of ancient dune country - and next door to pristine Pennington Bay - Kestrel Downs offers a beautiful vista of waterways and islands. Wake to dawn's light reflected in the ocean inlet of Pelican Lagoon; sit on the verandah and watch native fauna drink and bathe at the bird bath.
The property's native bushland is home to kangaroos, wallabies, bandicoots, echidnas, goannas and plentiful bird life; it offers serene sea and bushland views from every window, not a neighbour in sight.
This island retreat features spacious open plan living with Balinese furniture, polished bamboo floors and a sparkling new farm-size kitchen. Light and airy, it offers eco-friendly design features including solar power, surround verandah and pure rainwater throughout.

Additional Location Information
Kestrel Downs is close to many Island attractions.
One of very few properties located on the narrow isthmus of the island, it affords magnificent northern views over the ocean inlet of Pelican Lagoon and to the township of American River in the distance; and to the south, is the mighty Southern Ocean.
The driveway of Kestrel Downs is opposite Pelican Lagoon and the house enjoys an elevated position, looking over native vegetation to the sea.

Kestrel Downs was excellent value for money and even better than we expected. Within a few minutes of driving off the ferry we were enjoying a relaxing cuppa on the verandah, enjoying views of Pelican Lagoon and watching birdlife and kangaroos coming in for a drink just a few metres away! The modern comfortable home was clean and well appointed, with comfortable furniture and beds. And it's nicely isolated and private, so it felt like Kangaroo Island belonged just to us! We definitely recommend it!

Loved Kestrel Downs the moment we arrived! It's location is superb and house gently in harmony with the surroundings. Beautiful water views from inside and outside and sooo peaceful! We spent a lot of time chilling out on the verandah, a great spot to watch the birds and kangaroos at the bird bath. Stunning kitchen with everything you need and loved the decor. In the end, apart from ducking down to the beach, we didn't stray far from home, too many good things to enjoy. Will definitely be back!

We stayed at Kestrel Downs for 2 weeks during December 2013. It is the perfect location to stay on Kangaroo Island as it is elevated and has magnificent views from the house over Pelican lagoon and is within walking distance to beautiful Pennington Beach. It has wildlife right on the doorstep with wallabies and kangaroos drinking from the bird bath in the garden in the morning and early evening. As soon as we walked in we felt relaxed and the artwork and furnishings contributed to that comfortable holiday feeling. The house is large and newly renovated and would easily accommodate 6 people. The kitchen is a dream and has everything you could possible want or need. In fact, Kestrel Downs has everything and we couldn't think of one thing that could be improved or added. At the end of our stay we were very reluctant to leave.

This is a self contained house that was very relaxing to stay at. It is clean and everything we needed was provided. Easy place to find and privacy is assured. Sat back each night and watched the wallabies and kangarooos come in to drink from the bird bath. You will need to buy all your food supplies as it is a 30km drive to the supermarket but I couldn't fault the place. It was what we wanted, a house with an amazing view over the bay, especially on dusk and got to see dolphins leaping out of the water at the surf beach in the mornings.
Thanks for the great comments, Mark. you were a wonderful guest and we hope to see you in the future.
However, I would like to respond to your comment regarding "distance to food" -
The American River township is only 7 km from Kestrel Downs. It has a general store with supermarket lines, fruit and veg, stationary, hardware and petrol; also a shop which sells fresh, local oysters, a restaurant, a post office, a church, a boat launching ramp etc.
There is a larger town with additional retail variety 22km away.
