Additional Location Information
Unique beauty in South-eastern Crete
Kato ZakrosFar from the over developed tourist regions of Crete, in the most eastern place, Kato Zakros combines the ruins of important Minoan palace with beautiful beaches and exceptional walking ways
In this captivating natural beach of Kato Zakros that the ancient Minoans, lived, we created by according to their architecture the traditional hotel group "ATHENA" and "KATERINA", ready to welcome you for your vacations, the whole year.
Zakros and its seaport Kato Zakros are found in the most south-eastern part of Crete and are three hours away from Heraklion or about 40 minutes from Sitia.
It is a reason for the traveller to realise how big and inexhaustible Crete is, while if it happens to love hiking, he will realise with surprise that he reached the point where the famous European path E4, which begins from the Pyrenees mountains and crosses France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Hungary and Bulgaria, reaches continental Greece up to Peloponnese then Crete and finally Kato Zakros, finishes.
Knowing the place
Zakros and Kato Zakros belong to the Municipality of Sitia, one of the eastern municipalities of Lasithi prefecture. Most of the people are working in agriculture and especially with the production and the last years with the export of olive oil. Here, in this faraway but alive and self-sufficient corner of Crete, you will know people that work with the land and you will taste exceptional quality fruits and vegetables, but also one of the best olive oils of Crete. Quality that is owed to the morphology of soil and to the water that irrigates the 250.000 and more olive trees, with natural flow from the springs that are found above the village.
It is a blessed place. Not only it did not send away its people, but it kept them and they work at their land. This happened for an additional reason that made Kato Zakros famous all over the world, without however allowing the industry of tourism to "destroy" the area. This is the finding of the Minoan Palace at Kato Zakros.
Tour and activities
Leaving the picturesque and green Zakros (built at an altitude of 160m.), compared with the rest of the south-eastern Crete, and continuing on the road for 7 kilometers towards the sea, after a big turn we leave behind us the mountains and embrace the crystal blue waters. There is where East meets South. And somewhere there begins to appear the picturesque bay of Kato Zakros. With a large and two smaller beaches, with pebbles alternating with fine sand, this village seems to be close to heaven. The paradise of Kato Zakros, however, is somewhat different than what we usually have in mind. A beautiful beach and good food can be found throughout the island of Crete, without having to drive so many kilometers in the roads of the Eastern side. However Kato Zakros does not offer this only...
The MINOAN PALACE of Kato Zakros
Kato ZakrosHere was found the 4th Minoan palace of Crete, which is the only one that was not looted. Built around 1600 BC it had 180 apartments and covered an area of 8,000 square meters. The excavations at the site began D. G. Hogarth but the main excavator of the palace is the Professor Platon. The ancient palace of Zakros is smaller than the other palaces but has a similar arrangement with the palaces of Knossos and Phaistos. It has a central courtyard (patio) around which the building is developed with labyrinthine layout, it has three western entrances and a main entrance where there is an altar. On the west side of the palace were the rooms for the dignitaries while in the northern side the banquet halls, the skylights and on the same side were large basins that had ritual character. The main apartments and the various workshops were on the eastern and southern side respectively. The location of the palace was important because they could trade with the East as well as the other palaces of the island.
In the palace were also found a lot of pottery, which were in the treasury of the palace. Also among the interesting findings there are big swords with gold leaf, ivory, bronze ornaments from Cyprus and one amphora depicting a sacred peak and wild animals. Many of these findings are in the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion.
The Gorge of the Dead
Kato ZakrosThe Gorge of the Dead is one of the most interesting gorges of Crete and is found at the end of the European path E4. It starts from the village Pano Zakros and ends at the beach of Kato Zakros. The name "Gorge of the Dead" was due to the Minoan graves found in caves in the cliffs, which are visible during the tour. The various geological formations create a fantastic scenery. The gorge is full of life and because of its natural beauty the Minoans believed that engraved there, they would continue their posthumous life in this place. It is passable in winter and summer. At the end, just before leaving the valley of Kato Zakros, climbing areas have been created for those who love sports.
Kato ZakrosSpecial mention deserves the Cavern “PELEKITA”, one of the largest caverns at Crete. It is located 5 kilometers from Kato Zakros and it can be reached on foot or with a small boat. Its length is 310 meters and at the end there is a small lake with water and the excavations that had been done , have found human skeletons as well as traces from habitations from the Neolithic era. Near the cavern is an ancient limestone quarry (soft porous stone) and because of this the cavern took its name. The walls in the courtyard of the Minoan palace have been built from this limestone.
Spiliara is another cavern in the north side of the valley of Kato Zakros where the holy cavern of Minoans was located. You can visit it by car or even on foot, from the old road which connected Zakros and Kato Zakros before 1985, when the new road was made. It is a dirt road in a good condition that in some points is at the edge of the gorge, offering a magnificent view. Continuing your walk, do not forget to visit the water spring of Zakros, leaving for a while the wild beauty of Kato Zakros and taking a breath of freshness among the trees that shade the sources.
Only 8 km southern is Xerokampos, one of the most beautiful beaches with sand, where in September the white lilies of the sea bloom, a rare plant species. North, about 40 minutes drive, is the beach of Vai, with an impressive and unique palm forest. Very close, to a deserted area, is the Toplou Monastery (Panagia Akrotiriani), an important historical monument that played a key role in the resistance against the Venetians and the Turks. The little church with the old, valuable icons and a historical exhibition worth a visit.
Kato ZakrosFinally, apart from the magic of the landscape, the sea and the sun all year around, Kato Zakros is worth the miles to travel , even if you just wish to relax on a beautiful beach in Crete, without so many people and mainly without feeling like a tourist. Besides, if not immediately, you will get to know the locals and enter their company. The swim in the crystal clear waters, the nature and the old civilization of Crete, await you.
