The Kaya Cottages are two unique, authentic restoration cottages in the idyllic rural village of Kayakoy.
The original and still one of the the loveliest holiday rentals in the area.
The beautifully tiled raised pool area overlooks the picturesque Kaya Valley and surrounding mountains and forest . Each cottage has a private seating area and the property is surrounded by gardens and a rustic stone wall.
Kaya is one of the rare places where you will truly find the unspoilt side of Turkey and experience real Turkish culture and Village life. It is the perfect place to relax or to explore.
Visit the ruins of a Greek town dating back to Lycian and Roman times, find a hidden Monastery overlooking the Mediterranean, sample Turkish Wine, Cuisine and Hospitality at nearby family owned restaurants or swim and chat with Turkish locals at Gemiler Beach.
Kaya Village remains unspoilt by the mass tourism yet is easily accessible from Dalaman Airport (1hr transfer) and Fethiye Town (10km)
Kaya Village is located around the historic ruins of Levissi. Ruins of houses, chapels, schools, workshops, churches lie nestled against the hillside, forming a unique open-air museum. Levissi (or Karmylassos) was abandoned as part of a forced population exchange between Greece and Turkey in the early 1920s. Exploring the site via worn pathways weaving between houses and churches is a wonderful experience.
The ruins of Levissi were the inspiration for the Louis De Bernieres novel Birds Without Wings.
"Birds Without Wings begins in the early 1900s in an idyllic town in South West Anatolia during the declining years of the Ottoman Empire. It traces the fortunes of one small community in which Christian and Muslim lives and traditions have co-existed peacefully over the centuries, and in which friendship, even love, can transcend religious differences."
The Smokehouse Cottage
The Smokehouse is a large one bedroom stone built cottage with tiled floors throughout, whitewashed walls and wooden beamed ceilings.
As you enter the Smokehouse you pass through the quirky blue Cottage style kitchen area with a dining area and fireplace. The verandah and outside dining area are just off the kitchen.
You then enter a spacious living room with large Turkish style fireplace, and two day beds perfect for relaxing or to sleep extra guests. A simple CD player, games and a collection of books are available for guests use. This room acts as a perfect separate bedroom during summer months when the family will spend time in outdoors areas.
During cooler months a wood burning stove is also installed and the room becomes a cosy haven after a days hiking or exploring. Perfect with a glass of red!
The bathroom has decorative blue tiling, basin, shower and hot water all year round.
The bedroom has an air-conditioning unit and ceiling fan, large built in cupboards and double doors opening onto a private terrace that has wonderful views of the Valley. A delightful breakfast spot.
Off the outside sitting area is an outside shower room with a second WC.

We booked the holiday for some warmth and sunshine after the wettest English winter on record. The owner Clare was so hospitable and arranged everything including a couple of mountain bikes. The cottage is just as others describe it, authentically Turkish full of charm and colour but well equipped. There are wonderful walks and bike rides from the cottage which are described and mapped out in a small book written by a local English man. Inspite of being in an ancient rural community one is well served with transport and local shops. We had great weather and swam daily in the little blue pool and enjoyed chatting with Clare about our daily itinerary when she popped by to water her pots. We loved the little hippie restaurant in the village, The Blue Butterfly. We really felt we'd enjoyed a priviledged holiday.

The Kaya Valley is a beautiful country retreat in Turkey. Lovely area for walking, cycling or driving. The bus service has much improved since our first visit,so we don't bother with a car. There are larger resorts not far away. We have stayed 3 times there, twice in the Smokehouse. It is a very peaceful cottage, well equipped. Clare looks after us very well and Meryam keeps the cottage and garden clean and tidy. This year we very much enjoyed the company of a younger couple in the next door cottage and our late afternoon reclining at the pool was enjoyed by all.
Ther is a family run eaterie just below the cottage and plenty other places to eat in and around the village.
We love it there and hope to have many more visits to the Smokehouse.
Weather has always been good in September/October.We are once again snowed in in Edinburgh. Would love to be at the Smokehouse.

Far enough away from the tourist crowds yet easily accessible if that's what you are looking for. We enjoyed a wonderfully relaxing holiday at the Smokehouse - very comfortable with everything we needed. The garden was a lovely place to be in and we really enjoyed sitting by the small pool relaxing and reading or simply looking at the stunning view. Clare is attentive and with help keeps the garden and pool clean she is also a brilliant source of local information. The surrounding countryside is a great place to go walking and wandering, the local transport will take you to the bigger tourist places nearby but whilst in Kayakoy you feel you have stepped back in time. We are planning to go again as soon as we can.
