“Very Enjoyable!!!” This cabin was everything we needed and more. This was mine and my husband's first time away since we had children. This was so enjoyable, the cabin was perfect. We actually plan on coming back and bringing our children. It is so quiet we could hear the leaves fall. The owner was so helpful and very nice. I will for sure be back soon.

“Super location - highly recommend” Stayed with spouse and two teenaged children while visiting family. The condo was located in an area with a lot of restaurants within walking distance that worked for both groups. It was well stocked and really comfortable. Two king bedrooms were large and comfortable and there was a quality pull out as well. Easy access to downtown attractions. Happy we found it and will stay again next time in town.

Beattyville log cabin

“Great location for a quite getaway” I booked this cabin for my wife and myself for our anniversary. The weather did not cooperate as it rained heavily on the day we arrived. The family that owns this cabin are very nice and will help with any needs. I had to have them bring a tractor and pull my van out when I got it stuck on the wet loose gravel and there were no complaints. We enjoyed ourselves in this quiet wooded setting and saw wildlife just outside the cabin. We walked down to the river which was muddy and rolling by due to the rain. We drove in to Beattyville for lunch and supplies and ate dinner at Red River Rock House. Other than those 2 excursions. we spent the rest of our weekend at the cabin and walking around the property. Our overall experience was quite enjoyable and is worth repeating.

About Kentucky

Kentucky is known as “The Bluegrass State” because the grass—thanks to its limestone soil—actually does look blue-purple in early spring. It’s a state blessed with an abundance of natural reserves, from lush forest parks to flowing streams and the longest cave system in the world—it's an adventurer's delight.

Find your base-camp vacation rental on FlipKey and let the adventure begin!

About Kentucky

A state in the south east of America with the Appalachian Mountain range on its eastern side and the huge Ohio River in the north, Kentucky is pretty much horse country. Lexington, one of its biggest cities, is known as “The Horse Capital of the World” and home to the 1200 acre long working farm, Kentucky Horse Park. There are also several horse museums.

Kentucky has another global claim to fame with Owensboro being called “The Barbecue Capital of the World”, thanks to its annual International Bar-B-Q Festival every May. We'd definitely suggest going to sample some of the tasty local fare.

Thankfully, there are plenty of parks in which to burn off the BBQ calories. These include The Daniel Boone National Forest (named after the pioneer). Here outdoor enthusiasts can hike, boat, fish and camp to their hearts’ content.

What to do in Kentucky

One thing you can’t miss when in Kentucky is Mammoth Cave. At 340 miles long, it's the world's longest cave system and fascinating to explore, whatever age you happen to be. Guided tours are available but have to be booked in advance because they're so popular.

If you're near Louisville on the first Saturday in May then go to the famous Kentucky Derby. There's a whole museum devoted to this world-famous horse race and a fortnight's carnival to enjoy beforehand.

Try out a traditional Kentucky dish such as the Hot Brown (invented at the Brown Hotel in Louisville). More of a sandwich than a meal, it consists of a slice of toast layered with turkey, bacon and tomatoes then a drop of Mornay sauce.

You can also take a road trip along the bluegrass byways in pursuit of the eight distilleries on the Bourbon Trail. One of the first distilleries was in Knob Creek—where a young Abraham Lincoln just happened to grow up.

Top travel tips for Kentucky

Just in case you're tempted to crack a joke, there really was a colonel who came up with the idea for Kentucky Fried Chicken. His name was Harland Sanders and he sold it at his garage in North Corbin. But all over the state, there are amazing outlets for delicious fried chicken.

If you’re planning to visit the distilleries on the Bourbon Trail, it’s worth knowing that most close at 3pm. So set off early and pick a designated driver before you leave.

Spring and fall are the best times to visit Kentucky, especially if you're planning outdoor pursuits since the summers are hot (over 100F at times) and very humid.

Roads can be bad for driving in January and February when there's often lots of ice. So, make sure to time your trip right.

A large state with plenty to occupy your time, Kentucky is an ideal vacation destination whether you're after the outdoors, cowboy history, the food and drink or the general bonhomie of the residents there. It's proud of its Wild West past and, especially, those stunningly beautiful thoroughbred horses it breeds.

Start planning your trip today by finding a vacation rental on FlipKey to suit all your needs. Just browse, book, and go!

Elin - Prickly Pair Suites
Doable, comfortable& enough living quarters space but .....

Address # should be visible, not behind porch coach light fixture, we saw address#29 the day we left. Definitely the kitchen stove needs an EXHAUST FAN. We cooked bacon, we had to open the KITCHEN window & back door to get out the smell. Also, the previous renters spill something in the oven & didn't clean it. We didn't know till we use the oven, it was horrible the smell. The bedrooms need thicker drapes, not thin sheers, outside light was hitting our face at bedtime . Patio doors & front room windows should have some blinds or drapes for the evening to have privacy. Shower upstairs ceiling is too low & small for adults. We had to bend your head fwd or back & be careful you didn't hit the wall while you're showering.see more

Mountain beauty!!!!

To get down the drive you need a four wheel. It’s not for the faint but, once you do it’s amazing!!! Best Vacation ever!! Greg supplied us with everything we needed from extra towels to more firewood ect. He was so polite and welcoming but made sure we had are privacy as well. The cabin itself is beautiful and can fit a family of 6! There are 4 twin beds upstairs. Huge queen down. It is limited electricity but we learned if you keep everything off during the day it charges ect. It has a small fridge. Anyways if your a nature lover (and a fisherman) you will love this cabin!! We will never forget! Best sleepin, fishin, and family time!!! Also, one of the best parts…it’s pet friendly!!!!!see more

Hike and canoe LBL

Very nice place with great access to LBL and the Lake. The home has everything you need for a short or long stay. The surrounding area has plenty to do if you are into the outdoors. If you are interested in history or old down towns Paducah is only a 30 minute drive. The owners are very helpful, courteous and provide suggestions on things to do in the area.see more

Amazing Fourth of July trip simply shakers cabin

I really enjoyed my stay here. The cabin was clean and had everything we needed. The bed was comfortable as well. An you had on call help 24 hours if needed. There was plenty of things to do around in the area that kept us busy an lots of fun. I got to knock Zip-lining of my bucket list. So much fun, Only thing I didn’t like was the put the jacuzzi on the ground level the basement area around all the woods look like we were in a cave an lots of bugs and frogs an stuff hoping around. But other then that I would definitely recommend staying here. Thank you!see more
