“Charming property inside and out with all the comforts of home” I recently stayed here with a group of friends looking for a short weekend getaway. The atmosphere was relaxed, everything functional, the beds comfortable, and the rooms clean and homey. Pat and Nadine were wonderful hosts and definitely put thought and effort in to creating an atmosphere that felt like home. Spacious rooms, bathroom, and a great meeting area downstairs with kitchen and dining area to hang out.

“Love, love, love!” From the moment I pulled into the driveway, I was in love! The setting was 100% private and lovely, in the woods as promised. Inside, the cottage was already warm and cozy, decorated both sytlishly and comfortably. All the little details were there - cold water in the fridge, a keurig with kcups on hand (HUGE coffee lover) - the firepit outside made the stay absolutely magical! I cannot wait to come back!

“Fantastic home, fantastic hosts! We loved it and plan to return!” Chris and Melissa could not have been nicer. The home had everything we needed, right down to a potato peeler! Clean, neat, well-appointed. Everything worked well. Our kids and grandkids loved the walk-out basement and watching the birds every morning. We enjoyed the trails, the beautiful snow-covered fields and trees, and the lovely creek that was partially iced over. It was cold outside, but oh so warm and welcoming inside. Our whole family loved our time at Vista. We all give it our highest recommendation. Thank you from the Gandees!

About Gettysburg

It may be synonymous with one of the Civil War’s bloodiest battles, but modern-day Gettysburg is a pretty, tranquil town with a rich history to uncover.

Find your perfect historic vacation rental with FlipKey today.

About Gettysburg

The three-day battle which took place just north of Gettysburg from July 1st-3rd 1863 saw over 8,000 people killed. This was the largest land battle ever fought in North America, when Union and Confederate Troops clashes outside the town, and today the main tourist attraction in Gettysburg remains the battlefield and museums.

There’s more to Gettysburg than its history, though, with plenty of outdoor activities, wineries, nature preserves and family attractions to explore. It’s also only a 1.5-hour drive to Washington DC and day trips to Hershey and Lancaster are possible, too.

While you’re here, don’t miss out on the chance to dine on traditional fare like Crab Imperial Casserole, fried chicken and game pie in the surroundings of a historic tavern or barn. There are plenty of family-friendly options for dining, too, from all-you-can-eat buffets to fast food.

What to do

Any trip to Gettysburg starts with a visit to the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center. This is the ideal place to uncover the town’s rich history, The Museum has 11 galleries packed with artifacts from the Battle of Gettysburg, there’s a short film to watch and you can take a self-guided or guided tour of the Battlefield on foot or even on horseback!

Tours of the George Spangler Field Hospital Site and Eisenhower National Historic Site are also available. Stop off at the Gettysburg Heritage Centre and visit the waxworks at the Hall of Residents and First Ladies.

Take the kids on a ghost tour at Farnsworth House, visit miniature horses at the Land of Little Horses Farm Park and shop for souvenirs in the historic town center. Golfers can tee off at The Links at Gettysburg.

Top Gettysburg travel tips

You can get around Gettysburg almost any way you can think of – rent a bike, explore the battlefield on horseback, rent a Segway, take a bus tour, walk or rent a car!

It’s 62 miles to Baltimore-Washington International Airport and around 40 miles to Hagerstown Regional Airport.

If you don’t like crowds, avoid coming to Gettysburg on the battle anniversary dates (1st-3rd July) – summer weekends in general can be pretty busy.

There’s far more to this corner of Pennsylvania than the Battle of Gettysburg, although history lovers are going to enjoy a memorable vacation.

Bring the whole family and rent a Gettysburg vacation property with FlipKey – we have dozens of rentals to choose from!

Great Christmas Getaway

Your cottage was a warm and cozy place to spend our Christmas, spent 4 nights and enjoyed each and every minute. The location and quaint shops in town were decorated for the season, beautiful old buildings. Our favorite place for dinner was the Dobbin House, thank you Elizabeth for recommending it to us!! Can't wait for our next stay

Our group of nine retired or near retired friends stayed at the Gettysburg Retreat for a long weekend of fun. We found the home to be charming, welcoming, clean, and much better in every respect than we had anticipated. The location was within walking distance of virtually every activity we had planned. The layout of the home offered individual privacy, while at the same time provided a gathering place for evening conversation. I would recommend this home to anyone visiting Gettysburg.see more

Can't wait to go back!

When I arrived, I was totally blown away at the size of the overall home including each room as the pictures do not do it justice. The spaciousness of the home itself is great for a large family or group to where you definitely are able to have enough of your own space, yet it is such a warm atmosphere that has been created by the owners that I would love to be there just with my husband. The closeness to Gettysburg is great, but the charm of Fairfield leaves a lot of additional places and things to explore!! I am returning in spring for a ladies long weekend and looking forward to enjoying the home and property and all it has to offer with its beauty and charm as my first stay definitely wasn't long enough to take it all in! I just didn't want to leave :)see more
