Additional Location Information

Central Kihei is convenient to shopping, dining and, of course, beaches! The trio of pretty Kamaole beach parks (Kam 1, 2, 3) are right across S. Kihei Road and extend south a mile or so; walk north one mile to Kalama Park, Charley Young Beach and The Cove (good for surf lessons). A401 is at the top of the front of Kihei Ali'i Kai complex, with on-site parking off a private access road. Within walking distance are a fine natural foods store (Hawaiian Moons) and the islands' largest local grocery chain, Foodland, is 1.2 miles away. It's a local favorite for produce and fish. Plus you'll find the brands taht make YOU feel like a local: Aloha brand shoyu (like soy sauce), Hawaiian Sun drinks and of course Hawaiian Host snacks. Buy fun, colorful, durable shopping bags here that will really charm the baggers at back home. Pick up your leis at Foodland as well.
South Maui is closest to many of the island's top attractions, like the Hana Road, Upcountry (the slopes of Haleakala, the enormous volcano) and the main island city, Kahului, where the airport is. You will get the most out of your stay on Maui if you have a rental car; it can cost about $40-$60 to get to Kihei from the airport (and, of course, to get back) and you'll want to be able to head up to Historic Lahaina (22 miles) or to the Maui Ocean Center (about 5 miles) in Ma'alaea Harbor, also home to Pacific Whale Foundation.
