“Great to experience genuine Japanese house” We had 2 nights in Kyoto and enjoyed this experience and comfort. Beds were welcome for mum/dad and our girls had the futons on the floor in second bedroom. Service provided was terrific and great to have laptop for access to internet/Skype. Would recomend strongly and stay again if circumstances arose!

“Beautiful, authentic, great location and brilliant customer serv” Loved this place. Bathroom to die for: steamy, deep bath opening onto japanese garden. Furniture and fit out extremely beautiful: tiny but good living space and more than enough room for 4. (Wouldn't go for 6 here) Loved: the help we received from Hiro in the office..always got back to us quickly, organised bikes, luggage, temples, bars.. ask him about the super-bathhouse nearby. Lovely guy. Would have liked: wardrobe space/drawers in the main bedroom, and one western chair for reading (if you have old bones!) We stayed with our two teenage sons who loved the ambiance, really japanese flavour and the chill out floor chairs!

“The perfect place to stay in Kyoto” I can’t say enough good things about this apartment, and the folks who own and manage it. My husband and I have now stayed there twice, the second time with my parents in tow, and hope to do so every time we visit Kyoto. The location couldn’t be more perfect: tucked away on a quiet side street in the Gion district, within an easy walk of many shops and restaurants in the immediate area, or a (still short) stroll across the river to reach the department stores and Nishiki Market, not to mention just a few steps away from Kenin-ji Temple, one of the most beautiful Zen temples in all of Japan. The apartment itself is a perfect combination of thoughtfully designed, lovely and traditional Japanese elements and modern convenience, such as heated floors in the bathroom and separate climate control for each room. A spacious tatami living room with a large, sliding , stained-glass window and traditional shrine forms the centerpiece, and is plenty large enough for four people to relax or have a meal together at the low table. The bedrooms are a good size for Japan, nicely decorated, and both the futons and the western bed are comfortable. The bathroom has both a western shower and Japanese stool-and-bucket set up, as well as a large and very relaxing tub with a little window beside it. There is plenty of hot water, plenty of towels, and a separate toilet room away from the bathing area equipped with one of the ubiquitous and wonderful Japanese “washlets.” Everything is maintained in excellent condition, and is spotlessly clean when you arrive. But best of all (at least for us) is the well-appointed kitchen, not just an afterthought in this wonderful apartment. Most of the in Japan, the “kitchen” of a rental property is just a small refrigerator and microwave, a rice cooker and a coffee machine; but here you have a reasonably large stove, an oven/microwave, and enough equipment (Calphalon pots & pans/kitchen tools/tableware) to make a real meal. In addition to the ridiculously amazing food shopping at Nishiki and in the department store basements, there are a few small and well-stocked grocery stores within a couple of minutes’ walk of the apartment. As much as we like the apartment itself, the owner and local manager may be the best thing about the property. They have thought of everything to make your stay here easy and enjoyable, including instructions on how to make sure taxis can find the place! The check-in/out process is smooth and efficient, there is a book in the apartment with an extensive list of useful information about the property and the area, and they themselves are accessible and responsive in the event you need any assistance or have questions. My husband and I have rented apartment around the world and I can honestly say that the Gion House is our favorite, and the best overall experience we’ve had. The people couldn’t be nicer or more helpful. On our second stay, an unforeseen circumstance arose that my husband’s basic Japanese was not enough to handle, and both the owner and manager went well above and beyond to assist us. In short, we highly HIGHLY recommend the Gion Apartment to anyone who wishes to spend time in the heart of Old Kyoto. It is a truly unique and special experience.

“Amazing place!” My family and I absolutely fell in love with this place. We couldn't have found a better place to stay. The location is amazing. It's right by the street where all the geishas and maikos enter the tea houses so we got to see and take pictures of some of them! The place is also right by the shopping area and several famous temples. For the first 2 days we didn't even have to use the bus or train! As for the machiya itself, it was gorgeous and we really felt like we were in a traditional Japanese house. Having 2 full bathrooms on both floors was also really convenient when you are traveling with more than 2 people, especially in the mornings. Our friends who have lived in Japan for close to 10 years recommended staying at a licensed machiya and we are really happy that we took their advice! Highly recommend you stay here!

Authentic Kyoto Machiya Experience

The best value you can get--authentic Kyoto machiya experience with Wabi-Sabi style and modern comfort. Beautifully renovated and appointed--exponentially better than western-style hotels. Plenty of space for a family. The house even had a laptop for guests' use! While I live in the United States now, I grew up in Kyoto. So, it was a pure pleasure to stay at this machiya and feel the spirit of Kyoto--inside the house and out in the neighborhood. Great location and excellent professional hospitality services. The care and the attention that we received before, during, and after our stay are exceptional.see more
Gion Kyuraku - Traditional Luxury in located Machiya in Gion | Kiyomizu, Kyoto!
A delightful place

We had a wonderful stay at this Machiya. It was a highlight of our fabulous holiday in Japan. Thomas and Rieko were great at communicating via email and thoughtfully answered all our questions before we had left for our trip. When we arrived there were lovely personal touches. Not only was Thomas there to meet us and talk us through important details (like how to use the high-tech Japanese washing machine!), but there was also a letter welcoming us and letting us know what was on during the four days we were in Kyoto. This lead us to going to a "requiem for broken and lost hair combs" in the local temple, which was followed by a spectacular parade of hairstyles over the last 1300 years - made for great photos. Another lovely touch was the origami cranes folded by Rieko, which we later took with us to Hiroshima and placed on the children's monument - very moving. We were travelling as a family of 5 (three adults and two children) and the Machiya provided plenty of room for us all - grandma even got her own room with an ensuite. The Machiya itself was immaculate and very well set up. We enjoyed having a long soak in the deep bath. It was great to have the kitchen, and our children appreciated being able to eat-in. Also having the supermarket (full of ready-made dinners) literally 1/2 minute walk away was much appreciated. There was lots to do in the area, including the walk up to Kiyomizu temple, where we saw plenty of geishas enroute. Each evening we walked down to a little playground near the river where the boys got their energy out. Speaking of boys and energy, we did need to make rather a lot of rules as the Machiya is so beautiful and we wanted to treat it respectfully. For the rest of the trip my younger son called Tatami mats "rules mats"! I would highly recommend staying here to experience traditional Japanese accommodation and to have a delightful place to yourself. Thank you again Thomas and Reiko.see more
Senraku - Beautifully Restored House in Central Kyoto! - Free WiFi
Little secret gem in the heart of the city.

Reiko and Thomas really looked after us during our stay in Kyoto. The house was absolutely beautiful and there were little notes everywhere to make sure we got the most out of our stay. The facilities were excellent and everything is just so pretty, and yet very approachable and practical. Its tucked down a little alley and when I was booking I was worried that it might feel a little seedy, but quite the opposite. It was like we had our own little secret place hidden away from the rest of the city. It was always such a pleasure to turn down our little street at the end of the day and head to Senraku house. My only complaints were that even at only 6'1" tall,I found the doorways unnecessarily low even for japan, but I got used to it pretty quickly. Also even though I didn't think it would be a problem by the time we stayed at Senraku we had been in japan for a 10 days and we had grown accustomed to the joys of a Japanese bath and were a little sorry that there was only a shower. But these really were very minor complaints. Overall the service, location and house itself were just fantastic. Our family (myself my wife and our 2 daughters 6 and 3 yo ) had ample room and just fell in love with the place. It was such a shame to have to leave after only 5 days there. We celebrated our 10 year wedding anniversary here and ate dinner at the very cute Japanese fusion restaurant across the road. So Senraku house will always hold a very special place in our hearts. Big thank you to Reiko and Thomas for making our stay so enjoyable.see more
Amber House Gion in Prime Gion Location
Essence of Kyoto!

I stayed at the Gion House with my family and extended family earlier this month. Staying at the Gion House makes our family feel like we are being transported back in time to the old Kyoto without sacrificing any modern luxury. The location is extremely convenient. It is at the heart of the old district and minutes away from public buses and trains. I will definitely stay there again if I go back to Kyoto!see more
The Gion House (Upper Level) Prime Gion Location
Memorable stay

My daughter and I stayed in the beautiful Gion House upper floor for five nights in March. Although the weather was chilly, the heated floors, toilet seat (!), duvet and thermostat kept us very comfortable. The location is wonderfully convenient and the manager was exceedingly helpful in assisting us with dinner reservations, shipping suitcases, and answering our questions . The owner provided many helpful links to activities and restaurants and the guests' binder in the apartment contained pertinent information. In the middle of bustling Kyoto, the house is located on a quiet side street and a rare chance to enjoy an authentic Japanese home. We will return!see more
