This newly renovated machiya townhouse sits quietly on a tiny little side street of a peaceful neighbourhood, offering you an experience that will allow you to take in the atmosphere from the good old days and the lifestyle of the local residents of Kyoto.
Tokiwa-an boasts many of the traditional characteristic features of an authentic Kyoto townhouse. The exterior makes use of the Ichi-monji roof tiling, retro-style gas lanterns, and latticed windows. Traditional machiya are often fitted with the ichi-monji ceramic roof tiles, named after its visual representation of the Chinese character “一” (ichi), where tiles are gathered straight without any space.
Inside, you will find ceilings and walls made from “jyuraku,” a process where earthen plaster is applied to a bamboo lattice, tatami flooring, fitted with old-fashioned ceilings, and antique wood furnishings found throughout the property. Much of the interior is made from Japanese cypress and other natural materials native to Kyoto. Traditional guest room are finished with classic clay wall and plastered wall techniques, all combined to create a space where you can feel the warmth that is friendly to both the people and environment.
The entire machiya house exudes of well-thought out craftsmanship - traditional, but with all the modern conveniences.
There are 2 toilets, 1 bathroom, and 1 washroom found on this property. A modern, cedar wood-lined bathroom will allow you to relax and rejuvenate after a long day of sightseeing. The window looks out into the small garden to offer guests a sense of serenity.
Gardens found in a machiya are not only visually appealing, but also functions as a practical design of the house. These gardens were constructed to funnel the wind, and cool down the inside of the machiya during the hot summer months.
In addition, this townhouse provides guests with a fully functioning kitchen, complete with: a microwave, toaster, two induction heating plates refrigerator, and enough dining ware and cutler for 4 people.
High open ceilings and a staircase will lead guests up to one of 2 rooms found on the second floor. The Western-style bedroom has 2 twin-size beds, with the adjacent Japanese room set with 2 futon bedding. This environmentally friendly bedroom is made from natural materials including floors made from Japanese cedar and traditional mud plastered walls built by craftsmen. The ceiling's high wooden beams not only reflect the historic nature of this place, but give the bedroom an airy feeling, a perfect place for guests to relax.
Amenities available to guests at this property include: complimentary WiFi internet access, a plasma TV, washing/dryer machine, air conditioning system, humidifier, hair dryer, and a cellphone that will allow guests to connect to the Machiya Residence Inn office 24 hours a day in case of emergencies.
The house is situated a 3 minute walk from Gojo Subway station, which is just one stop from Kyoto and Shijo/Karasuma Station. There are also a number of bus routes available to popular sightseeing spots like Ginkakuji (Silver Pavilion) / Path of Philosopher, Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion), NIjo Castle and more. Kyoto Central Station is also within a walking distance. Whilst being in a convenient location for all the sightseeing around Kyoto, Tokiwa-an is located on a quiet little side street - away from all the hustle and bustle.
