Anzu-an is accessible from both Gojo station- which is just one stop from Kyoto station, as well as Kawaramachi station- the center of Kyoto. The tranquility and beauty of this machiya, with its lacquered and lattice windows, are a welcoming sight for you to take in. Up to 5 people can stay in this machiya.
Anzu-an offers a serene space, where East meets West and a balance between tradition and modern is achieved. With the adept use of shadow and light, the design of the machiya embodies the ancient Japanese sense of beauty. Throughout the inside of the machiya, you can see various aspects of traditional Japanese culture including Japanese paper, lacquer, plastered earthen walls, large wooden beams on high ceilings, and fixtures (including paneled doors) made by special techniques that date back to the Heian Period.
The design of the Kyoto machiya is steeped in tradition- from the white lattice windows to the clay tiled roofs and protruding wooden lattice windows. Considered to be an integral and valuable part of the Kyoto landscape, the number of Kyoto machiya is disappearing. This is an opportunity to experience firsthand the historic beauty and comfort of a machiya.
- Entrance & Lounge Area
The design of this space is influenced by the traditional Japanese tea room, including a semicircular lamp shade on the ceiling and a paper partition. Beautiful as much as it is functional, the tea room found in a Japanese home served as a place to welcome company.
Also, from the “degoshi,” or protruding lattice windows, you can enjoy the interplay of shadow and light over the Kyoto scenery as the sun rises and sets.
- First Floor Living Room
Throughout the inside of the machiya, you can see various aspects of traditional Japanese culture including Japanese paper, lacquer, plastered earthen walls, large wooden beams on high ceilings, and fixtures (including paneled doors) made by special techniques that date back to the Heian Period.
Inside the classic cupboard are traditional plates and utensils, including Japanese teacups, an iron teapot, and rice bowls; enough cutlery and dining ware for 4 people. Please feel free to use these for your meals.
Other facilities include a refrigerator, microwave, toaster, kettle, rice cooker, and 2 induction heating plates.
From the cypress wood- lined bathroom, guests can enjoy a beautiful view of the greenery in the courtyard garden. The bathroom tiles are made from “Towadaishi,” which are blue-white and blue-green hued stones that can only be mined from a small region of Aichi Prefecture. When the stone is wet it transforms into a glossy blue color. The stone also contains minus ions, which are said to have a relaxing effect. A modern bathroom, this property includes 1 toilet, washroom, and shower/bathtub.
– Second Floor Bedrooms
The pattern on the plastered walls showcases the painstaking craftsmanship of the artisan. The old-fashioned beam that has supported the house for ages can also be seen on the reed ceiling. Along with 2 twin-sized beds in the western-style room, 1 Japanese futon can be laid out in the adjacent Japanese room. Additional futon bedding can be requested for groups of 5.
