Cherry blossom trees, surrounding the Kyoto Incline, bloom during the spring to create a pink tunnel around a former train line. Fireflies light up the “Philosopher's Walk” during the summer evenings, while Eikando Temple is shrouded with colorful fall foliage during autumn. In the winter months, a sense of serenity at the Silver Pavilion is conveyed with the calm, crisp air.
These are just a few of the countless mesmerizing landscapes that can be viewed during the four seasons in the areas surrounding Geppaku-an. This townhouse, which derives its name from the “color of the moonlight,” has been designed to make the most of the spacious 80㎡ area it occupies. From one-of-a-kind, custom made furniture, this machiya offers an experience that cannot be experienced anywhere else. Here you can experience a vacation that you will never forget.
The custom made urushi lacquered doors open to unveil the spacious 80㎡ area of the machiya. We hope you enjoy this beautiful Kyoto-style townhouse, which showcases many breathtaking and one-of-a-kind antiques made from traditional Japanese crafting techniques.
Past the antique wooden doors stand custom made lacquered doors. The surfaces of these doors have been coated with “urushi” lacquer, leaving a pattern which conjures up images of the moonlight shining through the evening clouds. The design is reminiscent of the machiya's name, “Geppaku,” which means the “color of moonlight.” To add to the atmosphere, the brick floors have also been varnished in urushi lacquer. We invite guests to take a closer look at these details to further appreciate the craftsmanship of this machiya.
The inside of the entranceway features a ceiling with decorative crosspieces and a sloping ceiling under the roof. Direct sunlight pours into the window from the south. From here, you can admire the view of the antique wooden door and white plaster walls.
THE LIVING ROOM & GARDEN
The living room is the room located farthest from the road. The windows facing the interior garden have “yukimi shouji,” or traditional paper screens that are attached to the top half of the windows, leaving the bottom half of the windows uncovered to offer an unobstructed view of the garden. In the living room, you can stretch your legs and lie down to rest while enjoying a tranquil view of the garden. The interior garden is an important area of the Kyoto machiya, where wind and light penetrate a small, confined space. The lush green garden can be seen through the window below the paper screen. At night, the garden can be lit up to offer a different kind of enchanting view.
The kitchen is decorated with antique fixtures and furnishings. To help make your stay comfortable, a refrigerator, microwave, rice cooker, kettle, toaster, IH cookware, kitchen utensils, and enough cutleries and dining ware for 4 people are available for use. The look and design of the antique fixtures integrated within the Japanese ambience permeates the house.
The custom made sliding doors in which checked patterns have been painstakingly painted on with a thin brush, open to unveil the bedroom. The high ceiling extends to the roof giving the room a more open and spacious feel. The history of the house is evidenced by the alcove and the area surrounding, both of which have been there since the house was first built. There are 2 twin-size beds in this western-style room. As you go to sleep, take in your surroundings to appreciate and feel the history exuding from the room. For groups of more than 2 guests, additional futon bedding will be available for use.
This room reflects how the surrounding area of the machiya is dotted with temples, but also features Western inspired styles such as the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art. The circular stained glass window of this room represents a seamless blending of Japanese and Western styles.
Enjoy a luxurious bath that will make you forget about the stresses of everyday life. A modern bathroom waits for you to soak in a warm bath and soothe your body from the day's travels, and offers you a space to gaze into the beautiful interior garden. A wash of serenity permeates the bathroom's white walls and dark-wood accents. The washroom adjacent features an antique framed mirror hanging above the sink.
Famous historical sites such as Heian-jingu Shrine, Nanzen-ji Temple, The Philosopher's Walk, Silver Pavilion and art museum are all within a small commute. Geppaku-an is just a 6 min walk from the Higashiyama Station's Tozai Line. The house is also less than a 15 min walk from the shopping district in the Sanjo area and Gion and Ponto- cho, which are also home to many machiyas. To get to these areas, simply walk straight along nearby Sanjo Road....Read more
