I wholeheartedly endorse the Hanare House as an option for a Kyoto visit. It was a highlight of our trip to experience a traditional machiya type place, in a local Japanese neighborhood in the Arashiyama area off the tourist path a bit. Yet, access to the JR line or the trolley railway was minutes away - my daughter and I explored all of Kyoto easily. Yet, it was wonderful to return to a peaceful setting, away from the hectic city bustle. And don't neglect Arashiyama - it has plenty to see just minutes from the Hanare House, including the extensive Tenruji temple, bamboo forest, monkey park, Tegetsu bridge, plus nice strolling, eateries, and shopping nearby. Feet tired? Try the foot bath/onsen at the Arashiyama station.
As a host, Tanaka-san was kind, helpful, and had excellent information on use of the property, maps, local tips, and excellent local dining options. He was very responsive prior to the trip, and during. Furthermore, his English is excellent.
I without any reservation highly recommend Hanare House.
