If you like history, you will enjoy staying in this ancient Normandy country house. Sleep beneath an authentic thatched roof; gaze out at the meandering river through an arrow slit once used for defense against attackers. After you've settled in to this small Normandy manor, venture out to explore a local village or pay your respects to our fallen heroes by visiting the beaches of Omaha Beach and San Malo. The property borders a national park that has several wonderful walks that you can take through the local countryside.
(2.5 hectares) Built in the 16th century, this small manor house is located in the hollow of a valley-- a historic fortified house built during the Huguenot rebellion to fend off Blanchlande Abbey. They lost the fight and in 1597 the last nobleman of the manor was executed. The manor became the property of the Abbey until the Revolution of 1789. The property has now been in the same family for four generations. Recently, the gardens and house were restored to their original beauty: stone walls, a genuine thatched roof, and even a corner tower with windows for shooting arrows and dropping boiling oil! There are a total of 2.5 hectares of grounds with a small river. Directly outside the house there is a courtyard terrace with garden furniture, a barbeque, and lovely views of the river and a copse of trees. The busy D-900 road is close by, so there is traffic noise when outside of the house.
The interior of the manor has been furnished and decorated in 16th and 17th century style, but with attention to 21st century comfort! Many features have been restored to their original appearance, including the internal shutters and wrought-iron artwork on the windows.
Ground Floor: A living room welcomes you with a Louis XIV fireplace in Valgnes stone, dating from the 18th century. The furniture is in Louis XIII style, and there is a satellite TV and DVD player in a Henri II dresser. The dining room has a 16th century granite fireplace. There is also a U-shaped kitchen, well equipped with a cook-top, oven, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, and mixer. Also on the ground floor there is a large twin-bedroom with an additional child's bed (0-6 years) and an ensuite bathroom with a sink, toilet, and bathtub with a handheld shower-head.
First Floor: On the first floor there are two bedrooms, each with a pair of twin-beds side-by-side. They share a bathroom with a sink, toilet, and bathtub. There is also a larger third bedroom with two twins, an additional folding bed, and an ensuite bathroom with a sink, toilet, and bathtub. Inside this bedroom there is an original 16th century stone lavabo liturgique, a basin characteristic of Protestant homes on the nearby Jersey Island. A laundry room with washer, dryer, and ironing facilities is located in an outbuilding.

Lovely property, clean and tidy and super comfortable beds. Kitchen was well equipped although a couple more knives would have been useful.
We loved the peace and quiet, yet we were only 10 minutes from the main town. Delightful owners who were very helpful and informative. Bedrooms are very lovely and we all slept very well. Washer and dryer were invaluable. The kids loved playing in the courtyard.
No stand up shower, no "comfy" lounge area. Whilst there was a separate lounge with TV and plenty of seating, it was rather formal meaning it wasn't great for chilling out.
So much to do and not enough time to cover it all. Portbail has the most beautiful beach - perfect for kids and only about 15k away. The D Day beaches are, as expected, very interesting and moving. Bayeux is a must. Mont St Michel was a long ride and it took ages to get into the car park. Worth the wait but if you have small kids or elderly/infirm people with you, it's probably best avoided in high season. We found the crowds quite claustrophobic.

Overall we enjoyed our stay very much. We were greeted by the owner, who stocked the kitchen with camembert cheese, eggs, bacon, juice, a baguette, and some milk. It was perfect as we arrived quite tired!
I would describe the house as rustic, not as a Manor House, which suggests something larger with more grounds. But if travelers appreciate history, this is a nice redo of an old structure. The layout with two master bathrooms accommodated our 2 families very well.
We liked the large eating area. Liked the rustic feel of the place. Nice renovation. The property is adjacent to part of a national park that has several walks mapped out through the local countryside. Unfortunately, this is not well advertised at the property and we found out about it on a billboard near the church. We didn't get to walk the entirety. I'd suggest that the owner put some info about that in the house.
The property is a stone's throw from D-900 which is a busy 2 lane road, more like a thoroughfare. Outside the house it was very noisy from the traffic, and not the country quiet we were expecting. There really isn't much of a view other than the other buildings on the property--it sits more in a little valley. The kitchen is functional, but small, in keeping with the rustic feel of the house. There is a grill, and that is what we used for most of our cooking.
We liked walking around the tiny residential village of Doville. We liked the location because it was central to the areas we wanted to visit, such as Omaha Beach, San Malo, San Michel, and Bayeuex.

We loved it and loved Normandy. There is an awful lot to see in the area so a week is a good amount of time to see most everything. We loved being in the country.
It was quiet off by itself. It was perfect for our family.
There is a slight sewage smell in the house - I think from the sceptic tank.
We saw a great bit of Normandy which was fascinating. We would like to go back!!!! I would suggest getting a guide for the beaches. There are web sites for this. We arrived on Saturday and our guide was Monday, which set the tone for the rest of the week. Read more
The smell was due to this being the first rental of the season. When in use, the smell disappears.

A very positive and rewarding experience. Great value!
Very new renovation, done in excellent fashion in the Norman tradition. Very quiet, but still a short ride to the nearest town. Wonderful owner, who filled the fridge with food and wine of the province. The bedrooms were large and the bathrooms very nicely appointed. The kitchen had all new appliances.
Just a bit hard to find the first time. Narrow roads the last half mile.
Very pastoral, and quiet. Wonderful for walking. Very helpful neighbors and owner. Great local food; 5-6 miles from the ocean.
