Lake Placid is best known as the site of the 1980 Winter Olympics, but the outdoor attractions including hiking, golf, and skiing, as well as the natural scenery have kept visitors coming back long after the Games ended. In recent years, the town has also become known as a premier spa destination. While you are here, try some of the delicious local seafood at the restaurants along Shore Drive, or visit Main Street for the quaint boutiques that offer a wonderful shopping experience.
Be sure to also make time for some of these outdoor activities that make Lake Placid an immensely popular getaway destination:
-Northville-Placid Trail: Admire breathtaking views of the region from this footpath.
-Adirondack Museum: Works of art from some of the most talented and well-known artists in the region can be found on display here.
-Go Shooting: Test your aim with authentic biathlete rifles at the Olympic shooting complex.
Don't let the small size of Lake Placid deceive you. There are a number of major events and festivals held year-round here, making every season of the year a great time to visit. Enjoy the ten-day Saranac Lake winter carnival in December, watch some of the world's best athletes in events including skiing and snowboarding at the World Cup Events in January, or observe elaborate parades and fireworks displays during the Fourth of July celebrations.
Get the most out of your time in Lake Placid by staying in a vacation rental. Whether you're looking for a condo just steps from the lake, or a rustic cabin in one of the more isolated parts of town, there's a property available that will meet all of your needs.
Many people spend their vacation exclusively in Lake Placid, while others use the town as a base to explore the rest of the region. In less than thirty minutes by car, you can explore Whiteface Mountain in the town of Wilmington, or the amazing climbing options that Keane Valley has to offer.
Mt Ash is a perfect place for our family base camp in Lake Placid NY. This home is clean spacious and allows the kids to retreat to the lower level when a little separation is needed. We love that we can park the car at the house seemingly tucked away in nature, yet most every activity we enjoy is within walking distance. In 2104 we lodged at Mt Ash for Ironman, its convenient location is ideal for training, race day and for my family spectating during the event. This year we spent 8 nights over the July 4th holiday at Mt Ash. The outdoor deck is awesome, great place to take in a sunrise. If it raining, the office/sitting porch has equal viewing. We can not wait to be back in the Adirondacks and lodge at our base camp Mt. Ash
We had a lovely time at this quietly located apartment just a couple of blocks from shops and restaurants. It was well appointed, clean and had all the comforts of home. I recommend it if you want the Lake Placid experience and a place to relax and unwind.
Imagine sitting on a covered patio, watching a little chipmunk run past, taking in all the scents of the pines and the flowers, the sound of a boat motoring across the lake, and sipping coffee while you watch the mist of the lake slowly burn off in the morning sun. Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, it's not. This great little getaway features two roomy bedrooms, a fully dishware/flatware/pots/appliance stocked kitchen, a quiet room hidden behind a fireplace, two full bathrooms, a deep tub for soaking, a dining area with great views of the lake and gardens, and the most comfortable family gathering room complete with wood burning fireplace that I've experienced in the years vacationing in the Adirondacks. It's a picture-perfect spot with fantastic Adirondack decor, quiet neighbors, and homey ambiance. Yup... my home away from home. You should try and make it yours, too. (but only when I'm not there :-))
Our family and friends stayed in Sue's Suite 329 February 2015. It was very cold but we kept busy with the amazing pool and hot tub, spa, arcade and bowling alley....there was so much to do...and we had so much fun. The pub had great food and entertainment. Kanu restaurant was phenomenal!
Lake Placid is a hidden gem in the Adirondacks and Whiteface Lodge is the best of the best there is. We will be back for sure!
