I have rented several houses near the water in Maine in the last 20 years and this was by the far the best. It was spacious enough for my family of four, and had all the amenities I would want (except maybe a cd player, but that's ok). We cooked most of our meals, and never once said, "I wish this house had a ---", so the kitchen was very well equipped, better than any we'd rented before.
But what distinguishes this house was the location, about 1.5 miles across the water from Mount Desert Island (MDI). We had excellent views of the tallest mountains on MDI from the sun porch, as well as the Narrows that separates Lamoine from MDI.
The house is right on the water, and we brought kayaks, which we left on the beach (although we moored them to the stairs because the tide almost reached the end of the beach). We kayaked every day and most days also drove to the Island. Because it is located between Ellsworth and MDI, it is easy to get to the Island.
We're able to by fresh shell fish nearby from local fishermen.
The house itself is very quiet, and although their are nearby neighbors, we never noticed them.
The basement was comfortable, but it was a basement, meaning there were very few windows. Rather than sleep in the basement, one of our daughters slept (very comfortably) on the enclosed porch.
Bring binocs! I wish we had.
