La Cueva eco-lodge Las Galeras, Dominican Republic
Additional Location Information
La Cueva eco-lodge is a unique villa constructed around a rock formation with respect for nature and integration.
The house with garden counts 1.000m². The house contains 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms (one in the cave, one outdoor shower) - 2 toilets, a large terrace on the ground level (with thatched roof), an upper rock terrace with a nice view on the surroundings, an equiped kitchen, a big walk-in closet and a large inside livingroom. The house is situated in a dead end street, so very quiet and no passengers (except for some neighbours). There is parking spot in front of the house.
La Cueva is situated in a beautiful laid back, quiet and safe (garded) residential area, only 3 minutes away from the beaches (playa Las Galeras and Playita) and in walking distance to the village, with shops & restaurants.
Set in a the middle of a horseshoe-shaped cove at the eastern part oft the Samaná peninsula, Las Galeras is the last village. The road litterally stops at the ocean. Between two superb capes, Cabo Cabron in the west and Cabo Samana at the eastern side, Las Galeras is relaxing at a sweeping curve of pure white sand, upon which an almost unbelievable turquoise sea laps gently.
Between these two capes you find fantastic nature (nature reserves, mountains, El Limón waterfall) ánd seven beaches, so one for every day.
Las Galeras is an old fishermen's village stretched along the main road. This small village has managed to maintain its peaceful and timeless ambiance.
Las Galeras is situated at the outer eastern end of the Samaná Peninsula, a thin strip of land poking from the Dominican Republic's northeast out into the Atlantic ocean.
The Spaniards made little use of this part of the country the first centuries of their rule, what made it a hotbed for pirates. Until the late 19th century, a narrow channel separated Samaná from the Dominican mainland.
It's not hard to appreciate the beauty of the peninsula. Perhaps the most appealing part of the whole island, this region boasts a coast lined with spectacular beaches that conform strictly to the Caribbean archetype of powdered white sand, vast banks of swaying coconut trees and transparant green-blue sea. Coconut trees, yes indeed, you can't miss them. The Samaná Peninsula has the most palmtrees per km²… worldwide!
Away from the water, the Cordillera Samaná, an imposing mountain range possessing a few spectacular waterfalls supports the peninsula, most of it penetrable only by horse. The peninsula is situated in the most sub-tropical part of the island, and (protected) fragments of humid tropical rainforest are found here. This is also thé place, in fact just in the bay of Las Galeras, where every year (january to march) thousands of humpback whales acoming from canada, are staying and making new baby whales!
