“Great to experience genuine Japanese house” We had 2 nights in Kyoto and enjoyed this experience and comfort. Beds were welcome for mum/dad and our girls had the futons on the floor in second bedroom. Service provided was terrific and great to have laptop for access to internet/Skype. Would recomend strongly and stay again if circumstances arose!

“Beautiful, authentic, great location and brilliant customer serv” Loved this place. Bathroom to die for: steamy, deep bath opening onto japanese garden. Furniture and fit out extremely beautiful: tiny but good living space and more than enough room for 4. (Wouldn't go for 6 here) Loved: the help we received from Hiro in the office..always got back to us quickly, organised bikes, luggage, temples, bars.. ask him about the super-bathhouse nearby. Lovely guy. Would have liked: wardrobe space/drawers in the main bedroom, and one western chair for reading (if you have old bones!) We stayed with our two teenage sons who loved the ambiance, really japanese flavour and the chill out floor chairs!

“The perfect place to stay in Kyoto” I can’t say enough good things about this apartment, and the folks who own and manage it. My husband and I have now stayed there twice, the second time with my parents in tow, and hope to do so every time we visit Kyoto. The location couldn’t be more perfect: tucked away on a quiet side street in the Gion district, within an easy walk of many shops and restaurants in the immediate area, or a (still short) stroll across the river to reach the department stores and Nishiki Market, not to mention just a few steps away from Kenin-ji Temple, one of the most beautiful Zen temples in all of Japan. The apartment itself is a perfect combination of thoughtfully designed, lovely and traditional Japanese elements and modern convenience, such as heated floors in the bathroom and separate climate control for each room. A spacious tatami living room with a large, sliding , stained-glass window and traditional shrine forms the centerpiece, and is plenty large enough for four people to relax or have a meal together at the low table. The bedrooms are a good size for Japan, nicely decorated, and both the futons and the western bed are comfortable. The bathroom has both a western shower and Japanese stool-and-bucket set up, as well as a large and very relaxing tub with a little window beside it. There is plenty of hot water, plenty of towels, and a separate toilet room away from the bathing area equipped with one of the ubiquitous and wonderful Japanese “washlets.” Everything is maintained in excellent condition, and is spotlessly clean when you arrive. But best of all (at least for us) is the well-appointed kitchen, not just an afterthought in this wonderful apartment. Most of the in Japan, the “kitchen” of a rental property is just a small refrigerator and microwave, a rice cooker and a coffee machine; but here you have a reasonably large stove, an oven/microwave, and enough equipment (Calphalon pots & pans/kitchen tools/tableware) to make a real meal. In addition to the ridiculously amazing food shopping at Nishiki and in the department store basements, there are a few small and well-stocked grocery stores within a couple of minutes’ walk of the apartment. As much as we like the apartment itself, the owner and local manager may be the best thing about the property. They have thought of everything to make your stay here easy and enjoyable, including instructions on how to make sure taxis can find the place! The check-in/out process is smooth and efficient, there is a book in the apartment with an extensive list of useful information about the property and the area, and they themselves are accessible and responsive in the event you need any assistance or have questions. My husband and I have rented apartment around the world and I can honestly say that the Gion House is our favorite, and the best overall experience we’ve had. The people couldn’t be nicer or more helpful. On our second stay, an unforeseen circumstance arose that my husband’s basic Japanese was not enough to handle, and both the owner and manager went well above and beyond to assist us. In short, we highly HIGHLY recommend the Gion Apartment to anyone who wishes to spend time in the heart of Old Kyoto. It is a truly unique and special experience.

“Amazing place!” My family and I absolutely fell in love with this place. We couldn't have found a better place to stay. The location is amazing. It's right by the street where all the geishas and maikos enter the tea houses so we got to see and take pictures of some of them! The place is also right by the shopping area and several famous temples. For the first 2 days we didn't even have to use the bus or train! As for the machiya itself, it was gorgeous and we really felt like we were in a traditional Japanese house. Having 2 full bathrooms on both floors was also really convenient when you are traveling with more than 2 people, especially in the mornings. Our friends who have lived in Japan for close to 10 years recommended staying at a licensed machiya and we are really happy that we took their advice! Highly recommend you stay here!

Our own little place in the middle of Kyoto

Great location, 10 minutes walking distance from Gion. The house was in perfect condition and the service was excellent. We were served by a gentleman who spoke perfect English, who gave us excellent recommendations for sight-seeing and helped us make reservation to a Japanese Geisha photo-shoot service. Would stay there again in the future, strongly recommended!see more

Enhanced our stay in Kyoto, the perfect blend of old and new

We had a fabulous stay at this amazing property, which has a lot of space (for Japan) for a family of 5 including a small garden and a tiny roof deck. It made us all feel much more like we were having a Japanese "experience" than would any hotel, and gave us enough room to spread out when we needed space from each other. The property is immaculately presented, with beautiful art and extras to enhance the experience further, plenty of books about Japan and a fully equipped modern kitchen, a washer/dryer - staying for a week it gave us an opportunity to wash, cook and feel much more at "home". Whilst the autumn weather meant that we did not require much in the way of heating, there are air-conditioners in every room, a lovely deep bath and two toilets (we loved the warm seats :-) certainly a novelty for us). The key pad for entry meant that we didn't have to worry out what time we arrived, or looking after and returning keys, and Reiko was more than happy to help us with any questions we had, and helped us to organise the transfer of our luggage. The location in Gion is perfect for tourists - it is walkable to many attractions, and about a 20 minute bus ride to the station. There is a supermarket just steps away, and many places to eat (in and take-away) within a block. It is an neighbourhood with little tourists around, yet so close to everything. All was exactly as described, and the space was perfect for the 5 of us - it would be great for couples who could share the cost, as it is quite expensive. We highly recommend this propertysee more

Clean and cosy home away from home

My husband and I stayed for 5 nights in this lovely little house and it was a wonderful experience. From the moment we booked i received lots of communication from Reiko and they sent us easy instructions for our arrival. The house is a lovely Japanese style home which was very clean and cosy and had everything we needed, down to umbrellas in the stand outside! We also really appreciated the heating/aircon upstairs and downstairs as we had a few very cold nights. Reiko even dropped in on our first day to show me how to use the washing machine which was really handy. Full equipped kitchen (though pick up some milk and coffee from the 711 down the street or the nearby supermarket on your first day!), new bathroom fittings and comfortable beds. Felt very spacious, especially compared to a few other houses that our family were staying in nearby. We even quite enjoyed ducking at the doorways which were a tad short for us 6 foot tall australians! The stairway to the upstairs floor is rather steep if you have poor mobility but not a problem for us. Kyoto was one of our favourite places in Japan and the house was perfectly located near to train station and lovely neighbourhood streets. We were lucky to see the cherry blossom in full bloom. Great stay and a real Japanese touch by staying here. Thank you Thomas and Rieko.see more

History, Charm, and Friendly Convenience

This charming "Machiya" is very centrally located on a cul-de-sac next to Kennin-ji Temple, surrounded by other old homes and has a wonderful traditional Japanese feeling. This is an established old area: while we were there, the little surrounding neighborhood had a traditional Shinto street festival one day with a float and Shinto priest presiding; all the neighbors came out and socialized and invited us to join in! The house itself is self-contained, with modern kitchen appliances and a washer/dryer. It is also extremely well organized for the foreign traveler with small English-language labels giving instruction on operation of the appliances (so helpful!). All incidentals are amply provided: laundry detergent, soap, shampoo, conditioner, toilet paper, kitchen towels, bathroom towels, etc., which was really convenient for us. The floor radiant heating system was nicely warming and quiet on cool mornings. There is a "house iPhone" provided for domestic calls - again super-convenient - and the Wi-Fi was strong and fast. The two upstairs bedrooms were spacious by Machiya standards (8+ tatami mat), with large closets, and the beds were comfortable for sleeping. Downstairs is a well organized kitchen, a central foyer/entry area, and a tastefully furnished living room.see more

Great place to stay while visiting Kyoto and beyond

Gion House was a beautiful and quiet retreat for our stay in Kyoto. We visited many restaurants and shops in lively Gion which were within walking distance; the bus system was easy to navigate from here so we were able to see and experience many sites around Kyoto and beyond. The ambiance of the home was very relaxing, the beds were very comfortable, the hints and information for guests were very thoughtfully done, and Sachi was very friendly and helpful! We would certainly stay here again.see more
GION LOCATION, LICENSED RENTAL, FULLY RENOVATED TRADITIONAL JAPANESE HOUSE.
Elegant, modern, simple machiya in tranquil Gion neighbourhood.

This little home was perfection and gave us a great traditional Japanese experience with all the modern conveniences. Warm wood floors, comfy bed, modern bath and kitchen made this home a superior experience over tiny hotel rooms. We are family of 4 with 2 teenage kids. They loved sleeping on the tatami beds, while we had the luxury of the 2nd floor bedroom. The house is professionally renovated and up to code with all fire regulations and is in a very safe neighbourhood. The house is conveniently located close to Kiyomiza temple and the many little streets, shops and restaurants of Gion area. Train stations within easy walking distance and a Lawson store right around the corner. Chris was very responsive with communications and many suggestions. Arrival, checkout, payment and deposit refund were easy, prompt and professional. The tiny restaurant across the street looked very authentic, but make sure to ask for reservations as it seems to seat only a few for dinner. We will definitely rent from Chris again and try that restaurant. Experiencing this home was a highlight of our Japan travels.see more
