“Charme and style next to York Minster!” Out of five stars I would readily give five and a half to this fantastic place where we (my auntie and I) have spent a couple of wonderful days! We immediately felt at home... I particularly liked the stylish look with its charming mix of antique and modern elements, well chosen, original decoration and those warm and appeasing pastel colours... and the kitchen is almost better equipped than my own back home in France! The beds are so comfortable, we just slept heavenly well in them... but that's not all: the location is simply perfect - very quiet, yet in the very heart of the city - the Minster, the Shambles, shops, museums, restaurants - everything is in walking distance... Speaking of restaurants: if I had to recommend two places, it would be the "Rustique" (28 Castelgate) - very nice French cuisine & friendly service - and for ice cream lovers "licc" (20 Back Swinegate) is a must! All in all a fantastic and unforgettable holiday experience, a big Merci, we'll definitely be back and recommend you to friends and family!

“A wonderful relaxing break” This was our second visit to this holiday apartment and the experience couldn't have been better. From the warm welcome when Mary and Philip helped us unload the car, to the spotlessly clean well equipped rooms it really was a great chance to reload the batteries. Despite the fantastic location, so close to all of York's brilliant attractions, it is a really peaceful location. Private secure parking at no additional charge is also a great bonus. Would thoroughly recommend for a perfect getaway.

“Perfect for our family break to York!” Dear Mary & Philip, We stayed at your holiday appartment from Monday 9th to Friday 13th May 2011 with our two young children ages 2 & 4. I just wanted to say thank you for your very warm welcome and the little treats you both left for us to start our family break off like a dream. The scones and good old Yorkshire butter and jam went down a treat along with the chocolate bars for the children! The children were made to feel as welcome as we were which is a deffinate reason why we would come again. The kitchen had everything we needed and the beds were very comfortable. As for the location, it was perfect. Just as described!. Next time we won't need to bring as much food & drink with us as the supermarket is very handy (especailly when you realise you have left a bag of shopping behind, like I did, it only took me 5 minutes to get there and back into the appartment!). From the apartment, it was great to stoll into town. We never had to use the car, a taxi or a bus where we wanted to go. One instance we had a walk out to the Grand Opera House to watch a famous comedian and on the very last day I walked into town to dip my feet in to the fish spa near the Yorvic Viking Center which I would deffinatly recomend, along with the apartment, to any one! Thank you again, and we hope to see you both again on our next break to York. Helen & Peter

The highlight of our trip!

By far the best place we could have picked to explore York! My husband and I had been to York before but this time we wanted to take our kids. This townhouse is situated steps away from York Minster and the park. We had room to spare but we couldn't pass up the location. The rooms and linens were five star! The newly remodeled baths were very nice... the one on the top floor was a bit cozy but worked great for the boys! We didn't eat much at the house but the kitchen was very fully stocked, including a very nice knife set. (I usually bring at least one good knife as normally rentals don't have anything that will cut. At this place I didn't have to worry about that.) You can't beat the location! It was walking distance to everything. We parked are car in the provided lot that was a short walk to the flat. It was very convenient. There are a lot of shops and restaurants steps away from the house as well as a grocery store. Most of the downtown is all pedestrian oriented. We walked easily to the Shambles, The Train Museum, dinners, pubs, the outdoor market, Betty's for tea.... and of course York Minster. It was a wonderful 3 days. We spent a totally of 11 days in England and our kids loved York the most! Thank you for providing a wonderful place to stay!see more

Simply a fantastic apartment!

This place is an absoulute gem! We arrived to a very warm welcome from Mary & Phillip and once shown inside everything far exceeded our expectations, from the scones,butter,jam,wine-wow!-things you really do not expect to find in a holiday home. The owners had very thoughtfully placed toys and rubberducks for bathtime for our 20 month old son,who thought they were marvellous! Even a potty for Thomas also! The apartment itself was spotless, really comfortable furnishings too and everything you could need was available to you in the kitchen. Really great Sainsburys literally a couple of minutes walk away too,and truly only 4 minutes walk to the Minster,so location fantastic! It was also lovely to have a little garden(complete with seasonal flowers) to sit out in,which was also really quiet and peaceful considering the proximity to the city centre. So thankyou Mary & Phillip for making our first holiday as a family really special,we all had a great time and we will be back!!see more
YORK Centre MONKS RETREAT 4 mins from the Minster
Perfect anniversary Weekend

Monks Retreat is as perfect a little hide-away in the beautiful city of York as you could wish to find. We know and love York and have been to the city many times over the years but Monk's Retreat is one of the best appointed and certainly most convenient places we have every stayed in the city; it's 5 minutes gentle walk to the Minster. Then there's the property itself a beautiful stable mews type cottage in a quiet courtyard fitted out with everything a couple could need for a self catering holiday and all to the highest standard. A comfortable and cosy bedroom, a spacious bathroom, a fully fitted and fully appointed kitchen and a delightful dining space and lounge area, all fitted into such an intimate space. And the little details impress; TVs in both bedroom and living room, stereo with iPod dock, dab radio, there are CDs, Dvds and books for guests to enjoy, lots of guides & leaflets on York, even previous guests' comments on where to eat. If only some expensive hotels could be this bothered about their guests' entertainment! And, rarest of all in self-catering accommodation, Monks Retreat is immaculately clean; we felt like we were the first people ever to stay there. Definitely could have eaten our dinner off any surface in the place! Last but by no means least, we received a wonderful personal welcome from the proprietors Mary & Philip; they were actually standing outside the gate to welcome us which I don't think we've ever had anywhere before. Such a personable welcome, a tour of the cottage showing us where everything was, an introduction to the sights of York and they even arranged for us to leave in the afternoon of our final day, very much appreciated! And if that were not enough Mary & Philip had also very kindly left us some essential supplies but also an afternoon tea all set out for us to enjoy and start our weekend in style. We just can't think of anything anyone could do to improve the experience.see more
