Additional Location Information

Lecce is the most oriental provincial capital in Italy.
Finis Terrae. Land where the land is over.
Lecce is the very last provincial capital in the South, in the heel of the boot direction. Here you can’t but stop.
And we wish to stop you here for at least one amazing part of your trip.
The town has a wide artistic patrimony, suitable for those who want to spend a nice vacation in the name of art and culture. Land of conquests, with traces of nobility in every street corner, but full of countryside flavor, sea and popular culture, superstition, syncretism.
This town’s origins go so back in time and are almost unknown; the first populations go back to the Romans. Several monuments of the old town have architectural features of that period, like in the case of the Roman Amphitheater, the Roman Theater, St Oronzo’s column, the Church of St Niccolò and Cataldo.
The Theatre and the Amphitheater are nowadays setting for Operas, ballet, classic, vernacular and modern theatre (if interested, feel free to ask us via e-mail details about the theatre season).

The peculiarity that made of Lecce one of the most beloved town of the last years, is the baroque excellence you may find in so many monuments (Basilica di Santa Croce, Palazzo Celestini, Church of St Irene, St Matteo, Church of Jesus, St John Baptist, Santa Chiara, Sant'Angelo and the Church of St Mary of Grace).
The Baroque of Lecce is a lovely local adaptation of the artistic trends of the Baroque of the Capital, Rome. Small village of the South, Lecce received quite late those influences and they were here imitated in the poor (though beautiful) local stone. The result was a peculiar local and unique style.
Very important and suggestive is Piazza Duomo, that contains the Cathedral, the 17th Century Bishopric and the 70m bell tower. Don’t be tricked by the amazing facade you’ll find yourselves in front of, at the entrance of the Piazza. It is not the true main façade but a fake façade, a kind of theatrical welcoming you. The true façade, the one driving you along the main nave to the altar, is on the right side of the Piazza. That’s but one of the tricks this town will play you when you don’t expect it.
