Casa Travessa - NEW photos! Adorable Rossio Home Lisbon, Costa de Lisboa, Portugal
Additional Location Information
Our historic parish, Pena, begins at the north-east corner of the Rossio and stretches up the hill to the tree-filled park known as "Campo dos Mรกrtires da Pรกtria." Although only minutes from the Rossio (Lisbon's main plaza), Pena is a family neighborhood, home to the Italian Embassy, German Embassy, grassy parks and ponds... and the birthplace of Amรกlia Rodrigues. It's a non-touristy, quintessentially Portuguese residential area: a village in the heart of Lisbon.
Parking can be a challenge on our medieval streets, but you'll be so close to the center of town--and public transportation is so plentiful and inexpensive--that you won't even miss having a car.

“Comfortable, perfect location”
This was our first time in portugal with lisbon as our first stop. Austin was very helpful, she sent us instructions to give the taxi driver so we would not have any issues getting to the apartment. She was waiting for us when we got there and gave us a tour of the neighborhood before she left. The apartment was comfortable and the location was perfect, right in the middle of Rossio square. We had a great time.

“Feel like being at your friend´s place”
I have disovered VisitingPortugal rentals by chance and I consider myself being a lucky person. Since I have recieved (at my home in Madrid)a nice little package which has contained not only the information about Casa Travessa and a Lisbon map, but also instructions about getting a cab at the airport and driving directions both in Portugese and English and a monthly publication about what´s going on in Lisbon, I felt like I knew austin for a long time, like she wanted to share everything she finds beautiful and special about Lisbon with us. Casa Travessa is just above Plaza Rossio, and the location is a great value, I just adored the view through the living room. As I said we felt like we came for a visit at the friend´s house, the appartment had everything we needed and even more - books, Lisbon guides and children´s books and games, fado CD´s so that we could really enjoy the atmosphere. Our nearly 6 old daughter has read her first words in Portugese there and our teenage daughter loved taking photos of those curvy, narrow, streets in Barrio alto and alfama, Cascais and all over this beautiful city. The food was great, huge portions, and the most of the people spoke English even in those tiny neighbourhood shops. It was a great choice for our family, we like to walk and explore, and we would certainly like to come back one day!
“Lovely central apartment with excellent amenities”
We chose Casa Travessa having seen it recommended as child-friendly, and were travelling with our toddler. We made an excellent decision! The apartment was an ideal base in Lisbon, being just a few minutes walk from the central Rossio (though up a rather steep hill/ steps...not one to try with a stroller loaded with shopping!) It was very thoughtfully designed and furnished, with a big comfortable bed and sofa, washer/ dryer, dishwasher, wi-fi and cupboards stocked with "essentials" (including a bottle of wine..maybe not strictly essential but yummy) which was a lovely touch. The apartment had a very open feel to it, and despite being so central was quiet, being in a residential street. A cot and high chair were provided for our son, and there was a stair gate on the stairs down to the bedroom. There were also games and toys in the apartment, as well as lots of information on how to entertain children in Lisbon...though our was still young enough to be fascinated by the fountains in the Rossio, the cats and peacocks up at the castle and the wonderful displays of cakes in nearby cafes. Actually, I was quite impressed by the latter too! The owners provided helpful and friendly advice while planning our visit, and provided lots of information before our arrival, including instructions in Portuguese for the taxi driver to find it...a very simple idea, but seemingly quite necessary! Austin met us on arrival and gave us a quick tour of the area, pointing out good restaurants, places of interest and public transport links, which helped us to orientate ourselves for our own sightseeing. We all had a great time in Lisbon and would not hesitate to recommend CasaTravessa to others.
“A quiet, cozy, comfortable Lisbon retreat”
The unexpected bonus that comes with this apartment is Jordan, the owner. He met us upon arrival and gave us a tour of the neighborhood. Not only did this put us at ease in our new location, but it also saved time the next day when we set out on foot to explore the city. The kitchen was well stocked--Jordan and Deb left a bottle of vinho verde, delicious Portuguese cheese, and breakfast items. Exceptionally clean and well appointed, the apartment provided comfort from the first moment we walked in. The location was perfect--close to restaurants, shopping, transportation, and historical sites. It was the perfect base for our delightful Lisbon visit. We will return.
“Location can't be beat”
Found Casa Travessa through friends of the owners Jordan and Deb Kleber when planning a visit to Lisbon to sightsee and run in the Rock & Roll Lisbon Half Marathon. The location of Casa Travessa is central for exploring the Rossio district, riding the funicular to the Bairro alto and Chiado neighborhoods and using the Metro to get around to other areas of Lisbon (Parque das Nacoes near the airport and where the R&R; marathon started). Jordan and Deb were very accommodating hosts, from meeting us when we arrived by cab and giving us an introduction to the apartment, neighborhood restaurants and stores, leading us on a walk around the Rossio area to personally point out the Metro stop, train station, personal favorite restaurants and shops, provide local history of the landmarks and answering any questions we had about the city to finally knocking on our door upon departure and calling the cab, then walking us to the cab stop. The Kleber's have thought of everything when furnished the apartment for their guests, including a cell phone with their phone number programmed for easy contact. There was even a bottle of wine, fresh bread and cheese stocked in the refrigerator, plus coffee for the coffeemaker. The bedroom and bathroom are large and very comfortable. The washer and dryer were a pleasant surprise too. We loved our stay at Casa Travessa and hope to visit again one day.

“A true five rating”
We can add but little to others who gave Casa Travessa the highest rating. Jordan and Deb are superb managares, responsive to a fault, the apt. is as described, the proximity to Rossio Plaza and transport to other pars of Lisbon and beyond just superb. The apt. was furnished and provided well beyond our expectations (we must have rented dozens of places in as many cities in the last few years).
“Casa Travessa is comfortable, clean and centrally located in Lis”
The owner, Jordan was very accomodating, meeting us upon our arrival and getting up very early to order us a cab. His orientation was very helpful and informative. The apartment is within a five minute walk (although a steep walk)from buses, trams and metro located in the Rossio. There are several very good restaurants and cafes in the nieghborhood, making it unnecessary to visit the crowded "restaurant row" with the other tourists. The apartment itself is clean, the beds are comfortable, the air conditioning was efficient. The kitchen is well equipped, when you have the need to take a break from eating out. We felt safe in the nieghborhood and although it is a busy area, was quiet at night. The apartment is a good value for your money and I would recommend it.

“It was everything that we hoped, plus the most caring hosts!”
First of all, Jordan met us as we got out of the taxi from the airport, showed us around the charming little apartment and then took us on a short tour of the neighborhood, which proved to be extremely helpful for getting one's bearings and feeling at home! The apartment was as promised: charming, incredibly clean, with a fully equipped kitchen and delightful breakfast makings in the fridge: wonderful cheese, bread, orange juice and fruit. We felt so well cared for at all times. The location of the apartment could not have been better: minutes from the main square, with a huge choice of assorted restaurants in the neighborhood, bus lines and the main railway station (plus a Starbucks, for a frappucino on a very hot day!) We walked everywhere or took public transportation when venturing further afield or to more outlying attractions, such as the aquarium. Everthing was easy. We felt safe in Lisbon, and in the warren of little streets where the apartment is located. We felt so fortunate to have happened on the Vrbo listing. It really was perfect in every way. The owners made it especially wonderful. They care about their guests very effectively, deal with any little problems that might arise, within minutes (such as how to turn on the TV!), but are not bothersome. We would add that there is a fairly steep narrow staircase down to the bedroom and bath on the lower level, which might prove difficult to manoeuver for anyone with a mobility problem. My husband and I are in our early 70's, but are quite fit and did not encounter any problems. We loved the apartment layout. And the views from the windows were magical, at all times of the day and night. We were sad to leave "our" Lisbon pied a terre!

“great location, wonderful hosts”
As all of the reviewers have noted, the apartment is in a great location in a "real" Lisbon neighborhood, is lovely and comfortable, has lots of useful amenities like guidebooks, a loaner laptop and wi-fi, well equipped kitchen, and lovely welcome basket. Jordan's introductory tour was a perfect orientation for newcomers. I want to also mention how helpful Jordan was when the airline lost one of our bags, and then didn't deliver it as promised. After a frustrating wait for the promised delivery, and difficulties communicating with the airport folks, Jordan cheerfully took over. He sent us out to enjoy Lisbon while he called the van driver, arranged for our bag to get delivered, and then met the driver and brought the bag in while we were out enjoying dinner at one of the restaurants he'd recommended. It salvaged an otherwise frustrating day, making it a lovely first day in Lisbon after all. This goes well beyond the level of assistance one would usually expect in a self-catering apartment. Besides being close to the Rossio, we enjoyed the neighborhood itself, including the great walking tour that Deb has written up and tucked in the everything-you-might-want-to-know notebook.
“A fabulous long weekend - we hope to return soon”
My partner and I were extremely impressed at the kindness and attention to detail that Jordan and Deb offered in their lovely apartment. Jordan met us at the apartment when we arrived, opening the door to some beautiful Fado music playing on the stereo, and magnificent views out of the living room window. The apartment itself was immaculate and airy, with everything that one might need for a short or longer stay. Jordan's short tour of the local area when we arrived was extremely welcome - we took up many of his recommendations for places to eat, and loved the fact that we were staying somewhere personal, and which genuinely felt a part of Lisbon life. The location of Casa Travessa was fantastic. Tucked away in a tiny side street above the central Praça de D. Pedro IV, and a few short minutes away from Rossio station (trains out to the Unesco World Heritage site, Sintra), it is close enough to everything to make getting around very easy, but hidden away enough to be off the tourist-track. It felt like a little haven to come back to in the evening. Small touches like bread and cheese and fruit, and Portuguese green wine in the fridge, made us feel at ease. I sometimes have a feeling of apprehension when arriving, tired and slightly bewildered, in a new city, but Jordan and Deb smoothed that feeling over, making us feel comfortable and chilled out in a city which is itself the epitome of laid-back mediterranean cool. I think we were extremely fortunate to book this wonderful gem of an apartment: it made our stay very memorable. It is clear that Jordan and Deb have thought very carefully about what would make a visitor feel at home, and I think many owners of holiday apartments elsewhere in Europe would do well to take a leaf out of their book. My only regret is the shortness of our stay. Lisbon is now at the top of my list of favourite cities, and I am hoping to return soon.
