The Mouraria is one of the most traditional neighborhoods of Lisbon , which takes its name from the fact that D. Afonso Henriques (ower 1st king) , after the conquest of Lisbon , have confined an area of the city for Muslims . It was in this neighborhood that the Moors remained after the Christian Reconquest . In turn , the christians were confined to districts Castle and Alfama .
In this and the surrounding neighborhoods , originated the first productions of Portuguese Mudejar art , that would give way for the emergence of the Manueline style , sometimes also called the Portuguese late Gothic or flaming.
The sadness and melancholy of Moorish music are at the origin of the famous Fado.In this neighborhood lived singers as Severa , Fernando Maurício and grew Mariza , the most international contemporary Portuguese fado singer .
After the public opening of the shopping center in the Moorish Martim Moniz , the neighborhood has become a very busy and friendly place . Currently , the Moorish quarter is a meeting point for people of different cultures and , simultaneously , a site that keeps alive their ancient folk traditions , as confirmed by the existence of several fado houses , bars , taverns and cultural and sports authorities to pair of shops of Chinese and Indian origin , among others .
