Description
Positioned above a quiet lane and backed by National Trust owned Velvet Hill, Velvet Cottage is the perfect base to explore the wealth of outdoor activities available in the area, including some of the best walking in the UK - right from the doorstep! Velvet Cottage is over 200 years old and features exposed beams and low doorways. Due to the external access steps and an internal staircase, the cottage isn't suitable for persons of limited mobility or breathing conditions such as asthma.
There are three upstairs bedrooms - one with a superking double, a second with two single beds and a third small single bedroom suitable for a child or small adult. A large shared bathroom contains a shower, bath, WC and toilet. The ground floor features a kitchen/dining area with breath-taking views across the valley. The dining table is suitable for up to five people. The kitchen features an electric oven and hob, a large fridge/freezer, a kettle, a microwave and a sink and draining area. Also on the ground floor can be found the lounge, with two ok framed leather sofas, satellite smart TV and a DVD player. Towels, bed linen, utility bills & unlimited fast broadband are included in the price. To comply with Welsh government legislation the cottage is strictly no smoking internally. A sheltered seat with with an ash bucket is provided outside the rear access door.
Outside, the terrace offers the opportunity for al fresco dining in warm weather, and a small private sunbathing terrace accessed via a fairly steep path to the rear of the property. Velvet Cottage has a large enclosed garden which is perfect for dogs to explore freely!
Although Velvet Cottage offers privacy and peace, there are many local amenities. Abbey farm bar and bistro is just three minutes' walk away and offers hearty evening meals and wholesome country breakfasts. Twenty minutes' walk will bring the visitor to the Chainbridge Hotel in one direction and the Britannia Inn in the other. Both feature excellent food in glorious surroundings. Llangollen, with it's wide variety of local shops, restaurants and pubs, is thirty magical minutes' walk down the Llangollen canal.

“Rustic charm”
My fellow companion and I have often driven along the A5 through Llangollen into Snowdonia but never had time to to stop and appreciate the Llangollen valley and the river D. We found Velvet cottage on line and decided to book a 3 day stop over on our return trip from further north. The cottage was warm and comfortable boasting glorious views of the surrounding countryside. Private off road parking was a welcome bonus especially as the lane was very narrow , but quiet for all that. Inside the kitchen was spacious, accomodating a good size table and six chairs. Fridge/freezer, microwave, oven, cutlery pots, pans and crockery were all in good order and housed in modern units. The sitting room was warm and cosy with two sofas, TV and dvd player. It also featured the luxury of extra heating in excess to the central heating. The bathroom boasted a bath and separate electric shower. The master bedroom was blessed with a huge 6' wide bed and yet a further TV and Dvd. Two smaller bedrooms offered a further three single beds. I cant describe the internal decor as luxurious , some of which looked a little tired and rustic but maybe in keeping with the age and character of the cottage. However all was clean and comfortable and we are eager to plan return visit on a future trip. Very acceptable eating out facilities were as close as a five minute walk, extending to further options within easy reach or a short drive. And talking of walks, you really are spoilt for choice. Just turning left from the cottage gate brought you into stunning views as the route circumnavigated Velvet Hill. Nearby town of Llangollen offered plenty of interest, not to mention the turbulent river D flowing in picturesque torrents, and the peace and serenity of the Llangollen canal. We enjoyed a very pleasant cruise to and over the nearby aquaduct. In conclusion, did we enjoy our stay? Yes, very much. A peaceful location with stunning views and many local attractions. We will definitely be aiming to return to Velvet cottage .
