Chiswick strikes the right median between action and stillness, the urbane and the pastoral. With its riverside walks, numerous green spaces, quiet, leafy Victorian streets, and vibrant high road, it’s hard to believe the dissonance of the city is only a short tube ride away. And where there's more air to breathe outdoors, you'll find more room to spread out inside too. In this smart mansion block on the Chiswick High Road, Prebend Mansions is a spacious apartment: a connoisseur’s blend of comfort, magnificence and decorum, it promises a cultivated break for the civilised traveller.
Your hosts are a retired Brit and an American who like to weigh out their time equally between London and Palm Springs. Their worldly tastes, and love of culture are mirrored in this impeccably renovated home, with its columns of books, hand picked pieces of art, and gorgeous possessions from around the globe.
Step through the front door into a large sitting-dining room, and curl up in one of the bespoke upholstered chairs. Admire the harmonious composition, as light from the French doors plays on the dark polished wood, the silver ornaments, and objets d’art. In the kitchen, a huge American style fridge and modernist metal chairs keep things cool. So take a glass of Rosé to the book lined study and enjoy some Monteverdi in surround sound from the entertainment system. The sofa doubles as a king size bed, and rumour has it, is the most comfy mattress money can buy, so if you’re tempted by slumber, be sure not to miss out on the fading evening light in the delightful garden. Here, a Greek statue, a fish pond with trickling water, a summerhouse, a kitchenette, and a state of the art barbeque offer a true renaissance in al fresco entertaining. Later, temperance will be restored with the help of a huge walk-in shower, and adjacent twin sinks in the lovely bathroom. The impressive master bedroom with its sumptuous king size, carved wooden bed will inspire all manner of elaborate dreams, from Baroque through to Rococo.
Gratify your inner Feng Shui with the Renaissance architecture and gardens of nearby Chiswick House. After which, you’ll find some excellent restaurants on Chiswick High Road for a spot of lunch. Alternatively, you might prefer to pick up something wholesome at the farmers and fine food market for a well-balanced dinner at home.
And if you’re craving an earthier palette of high and low culture, then central London is only half an hour away by tube or car.
