Wandsworth is an area centred around Wandsworth Common, a public park similar to Clapham Common. The river front towards Battersea is a former wharf area that now hosts apartment blocks, several bars and restaurants. Nestled between Chelsea and Albert Bridge is Battersea Park, one of London’s most interesting green spaces housing a children’s zoo, tennis courts, a bowling green, an athletics track and some historic and attractive gardens surrounding the lake. Notable pubs in the area include the Ship Inn and the Waterfront, both of which are on the water on the western and eastern side of Wandsworth Bridge. Set back from the river towards Wandsworth Town train station is Old York Road, a little street with restaurants and shops which used to be the former centre of old Wandsworth. This spreads to an area of grander semi-detached and detached housing along the roads bounded by West Side Wandsworth Common, Earlsfield Road and East Hill. Houses in this area are desired by city workers, lawyers and other professionals because they retain their Victorian character and are very spacious. Another of Wandsworth's most historic and impressive buildings is the Royal Victoria Patriotic Building, which sits amongst the common grounds off Trinity Road. It was originally built to house orphan girls during the Crimean War but now contains flats, a theatre school and a high-end restaurant called ‘Le Gothique.’ For shopping and entertainment there is the Southside centre which houses a Waitrose, a gym, cinema and many other big brand shops. Behind this is King George's Park which follows the River Wandle upstream towards Earlsfield and further south to Wimbledon. It is home to picturesque ponds and cycle paths. Just across the river, reached by Wandsworth Bridge, lie upmarket Fulham and neighbouring Chelsea both within easy reach. Taxis are easy to come by and there are buses which will take you straight to the heart of Kensington.
