For those who believe that knowledge is a gift, let us offer you Holland Road. The London bolthole of a pair of erudite intellectuals, this is a home that gives you not only the space, but the atmosphere to think. Books, polished antique furniture and even a piano create a home that’s utterly tranquil – so if you’ve a manuscript to finish then this is the place to do it. Smatter applause upon the players at Holland Park cricket ground, sit in the sun at one of the many gorgeous nearby cafes, or amble over to nearby Kensington.
Alternatively sit in the leafy communal garden for a quiet snooze or to read the book you have been saving
You’ll only wonder why you didn’t think of all this sooner.
Your hosts are both doctors, whose main home is in Norfolk, where they tend the land and run a pottery. They keep Holland Road as their London base – being so close to Olympia Station means they can get to and from Gatwick easily, as well as around town on the Overground – they’re here drinking in the capital’s culture as often as time allows.
Live and learn
The sitting room is at the centre of this home, lit by sunshine that spills in from the huge skylight above. From the comfortable sofa contemplate the graceful curves of the staircase, and some beautiful impressionist art. Select a tome from the classics that fill the bookshelves, and then wander through to the eat-in kitchen. The dining room next door is formal in burgundy and gilt, and six can be seated in splendour around the oak table. And after the second bottle of red has been emptied, perhaps you’ll all gather around the piano for a bit of a sing song?
The airy master bedroom has a king-sized bed and an ensuite- stuffed to the gills, of course, with our White Company toiletries and fluffy white towels. The second double also has a king-sized bed covered in our crisp white linen, and there’s a family bathroom, where those who do their thinking best in warm water will no doubt appreciate the deep bathtub, with or without that book.
And when the appeal of inner contemplation fades, you’ll find Holland Park to be inspirational. This affluent area is filled with independent shops and cafes, while the green lawns of the park itself are a handful of minutes away. You’re within an easy walk of Kensington High Street’s restaurants, bars and boutiques, and from there it isn’t far to Hyde Park and the museums. The tube from Barons Court to Piccadilly Circus takes fifteen minutes.
