You don’t get many better locations in London than Whitehall Court. Just a stone’s throw from the Thames and dotted with manicured lawns, it’s spacious and green, and the stunning St James’ Park is just five minutes walk away. But it’s no sleepy suburbia, as the world famous bustle of Covent Garden and Soho are just a few streets north. Wander the old cobbled passageways before retiring to your eminent riverside retreat and perusing, perhaps, the wonderful collection of old books. Tome of choice in hand, curl up on one of the baroque sofas, under the crystal chandelier, and relax.
Yours hosts are an English couple in their mid 50s. They spend six months of the year in London, and the rest of their time in France and the USA, and their exquisite London home is testament to their cultured wanderings. Inside, it’s resplendent in classical art and antiques, and their penchant for original features means their home has authentic historical charm.
Pad the parquet flooring of the high-ceilinged sitting room and admire the original stucco work which lines the walls. Dark mahogany furniture and an ornate marble fireplace add to the room’s welcome air of decadence. Over in the kitchen, pour yourself a glass of red and sit at the circular dining table, or conjure some culinary magic on the slick, chrome appliances. Here, original sash windows peep out over the old courtyard and terracotta floor tiles provide a touch of warmth.
When weariness triumphs slide into the second bedroom where a whole wall of books hints at your hosts’ cultural pursuits, and lay your head on the four poster double bed. Over in the huge master bedroom, admire the candy-striped wallpaper and beautiful panelled walls from the fabulous king-sized bed. A large oak wardrobe and plush ensuite bathroom add a hint of grandeur.
Do the grounds
Simply wandering the streets of Whitehall, with their unspoilt period architecture and world famous Cenotaph, will entertain you for an afternoon, but if you want to stray further a-field, why not stroll up the Thames Embankment, or down to nearby Big Ben. Fancy trying your hand at public transport? Embankment underground station makes trips to other parts of London a cinch.
