If the Thames is a watercolour and Chelsea the splendidly fetching frame, this home has to be the most alluring of subjects. A picture postcard from the past, Oakley Street is brushed with all the colours of a bygone era. But beneath that marvellous Victorian frontage, you’ve got layers of modern loveliness. Artwork hugs shiny white walls, the furniture’s freshly fashionable and smiling sunlight paints a warming glow on smart wooden floors. Outdoors, as the greenery of Battersea Park mixes and mingles with the kaleidoscopic Kings Road, you’ll realise this is one history lesson in which the tone won’t turn sepia…
Artist at work
Oakley Street is home to a gallery of vibrant paintings, every last one of which is by the talented hand of your hostess. Her children having all grown up and flown the nest, she now spends most of her time in the countryside.
If art is all about perspective, you’ll love the graciously wide street and tall townhouses on the approach to your front door. Once inside, take a long lingering look at the paintings that adorn the sitting room before surrendering to the sofa’s soft embrace for an age or two. A statement clock brings you bang up to the present moment, while daylight skims off the modern dining table and bright walls. Flow onto the kitchen, ably fitted out for any feast, before looking in on the lush bathroom.
Your eye will approve of the master bedroom, plush and prettily clad in white. Two paintings hover over the headboard, while the ensuite is, naturally, awash with our White Company toiletries. The second bedroom can be laid out as a double or twin, flanked by red-accented lamps and more of that excellent artwork.
You can glimpse historic Albert Bridge from your front door, over which Battersea Park is just a short hop. Then, turn the other way for the Kings Road, brimming with shiny boutiques, gleaming restaurants and bright young things. You’ve a traditional Chelsea pub just round the corner, the horticultural history of the Physic Garden and the Saatchi Gallery’s modern art. The tube from Sloane Square to Oxford Circus takes just over ten minutes.
