Heard any new bands recently? This home has. Beside the rippling Grand Union Canal, Woodfield Road is so edgy, fresh and cool it’s got musos nodding directional haircuts in approval. A warehouse only recently converted, the ceilings are high and the brickwork exposed, yet all is smoother than a remastered LP. Huge windows, deep sofas and gently nodding plants accompany an album’s worth of contemporary artwork – and the terrace is ready and waiting for any rooftop gig. Yes, grab a guitar, plug in that keyboard and be ready to serenade the songbirds of Maida Vale. For this is a home to make a big noise about.
A young musician, your host recently started his own record label and is set to launch three up-and-comers in the near future. Also an artist, you can’t miss his many visual inspirations adorning the walls.
Pass through the coolly industrial entrance to find a home that’s large, light and seriously liveable. High ceilings, bare brickwork and exposed beams speak of its factory past, yet the present is all about modern comforts. Vast windows pour light across plump cushions, squashy sofas and wreaths of incense – creating a rather zen-like ambience. Pour some bourbon, soak up the sounds from the iPod deck, or flow into the funky kitchen to prepare dinner. Modern artwork and stirring photography pepper the walls, and there’s even more to be found upstairs.
The bedroom, with its bold paintings and cloud-white walls, is effortlessly cool. Pad across its whitewashed floorboards to get a closer look at the vintage furniture or at the moodily modern bathroom, hung with our fluffy white towels. A barbecue beckons outside on the terrace, all rambling plants and delicious daylight.
Stroll beside the canal to reach romantic Little Venice, home to cafes, quaint pubs and restaurants like The Waterway. Leafy St John’s Wood is just a little further, while Regent’s Park is a glorious green retreat. Too acoustic? Then turn the other way for the buzz of Notting Hill’s bars and eateries. When you’re ready to turn it all the way up to eleven, the tube into Oxford Circus takes just over twenty minutes.
