Watching great films is to be taken on a journey – to Gothams, garden states or galaxies far, far away. But at this home, you’re out of your seat before the opening titles roll. With a stunning outdoor projector, Clerkenwell Road lets you watch the Hollywood stars beneath a starry sky. Then, from the roof terrace, you’ll want to jump cut to a close-up of those interiors, all bare light bulbs and concrete walls, quirky artwork and retro furniture. Stay in and star in your own indie flick, or head outside for the action adventure that is the heart of zone one.
Lights, camera, action
Your hosts are the very definition of cool and creative. She is a designer, he a successful film director, and they live at Clerkenwell Road with their young daughter. Their taste in art, books and offbeat furniture is etched all over this awesome apartment…
Like the best narratives, this home is all about the tension – between a rawer, cooler side, and its shiny, new-build exterior. Luckily, it all makes for the happiest conclusion, particularly when you pad across the deep-pile rug into the sitting room’s funky-comfortable furniture. The windows are bright, while bare pendant bulbs hang from an exposed concrete ceiling. There’s plenty to admire in this creative, impressive space, from the dining table which juts out from a pillar to the many books and objets d’art thoughtfully dotted about.
Whip up dinner in the simple yet well-stocked kitchen before making for the master bedroom. Bright, bohemian and brimming with retro furniture, it also opens right onto the roof terrace. With its projector, speakers and widescreen view, you’ll be a popular host for film night. You’ve also a plush bathroom, lovely master ensuite and an airily modern home office cabin on the deck, which coolly doubles as a bedroom.
The great escape
Turn one way for the skyscrapers and sushi bars of the City, or turn the other for Clerkenwell’s celebrated restaurants. Should you be culturally inclined, the Barbican has a packed programme of exhibitions and concerts, and there’s the ballet at Sadler’s Wells. Mosey to the Museum of London, shop and sightsee around St Paul’s or whizz off to the West End. The tube from Barbican to Oxford Circus takes around fifteen minutes.
