Football, it is said, is a game of two halves. You may no longer hear the crowd roar at the sublime brilliance of a Bergkamp or Henry, but Highbury Stadium Square remains in a league of its own. The hallowed turf is now the loveliest landscaped garden, the historic terraces high spec apartments. Rather like this one. Solar powered and surprisingly serene, this home will have you chanting its name. The windows are wide, the views are tremendous, and the red and white colour scheme only fitting. With the tube so nearby, you’ll be off before anyone can whoop 1-0 to the Arsenal.
Your hosts live in the Midlands, where they own an international transport company. They have two university-age children, one of whom lived here before graduating. Both bridge players and art appreciators, they love to travel.
Here, the beautiful game very much lives on, as you’ll spot from the historic, Art Deco-designed East and West Stands, still proudly in place. These days, you’re the home team, so scoot up the elevator and into the open plan sitting room. Floor-to-ceiling windows let in lots of light, and also let you gaze onto the enticing communal gardens, or the other way towards Arsenal’s new Emirates Stadium. Pad across the laminate flooring and tumble into a sofa, or make your way to the kitchen for a hearty matchday meal. Every last corner is bright and glossily modern, including the table for five and nifty desk.
You’ve two roomy double bedrooms, both sporting the Gunners’ famous red and white. The windows hark back to the Art Deco style, while cool posters are coupled with an array of maps. The master boasts a sleek ensuite, and you’ve another impeccable bathroom, laden, of course, with our White Company goodies.
Home and away
Arsenal may have moved on, but they haven’t moved far. You’ll find the Emirates Stadium one street away, and, come Saturday at 3pm, it’s the only place to be. Stroll the open expanse of Highbury Fields, or up the pace in Upper Street’s parade of shops, cinemas and cafes. For the West End, just jump on the tube at Arsenal. You can be at Oxford Circus in under twenty minutes.
