What is Englishness? To some it’s county cricket, or the Book of Common Prayer, or chaffinches calling from the fork of a beech tree. To us, it’s homes like this. Elegant and refined, Earls Court Square II is an apartment to shake cordially by the hand. The sitting room is a polished study in sophistication, all antique mirrors, pink armchairs and armloads of books. And there’s no word for the location but spiffing. Part of a gentlemanly Georgian square, each townhouse overlooks your wonderful communal gardens, complete with children’s swings and lovely lawns. And with Chelsea’s merry bustle mere minutes away, too...
Your hosts have lived in Earls Court for almost forty years. Both retired, he was a food writer, and she used to work for Yves Saint Laurent. They adore the villagey vibe of their garden square, as well as its effortless access to the action. Away from London, they also have a home in France.
Georgian on the outside, gorgeous inside – you’ll find this home sitting pretty on the second floor. Which means you get an especially splendid view of your the communal gardens, not least from the sitting room. Here, draw a book from the shelves before choosing which snug armchair to sink into. The ceiling is high and corniced, the walls are icing-white and the period furniture all finely polished. You’ve a smart table for four, while the kitchen is deliciously modern in candy red.
There’s a floral feel to the master bedroom, as well as an elegance to its antique mirrors and deep red armchair. You’ve also an airy double, all simple lines, bright white surfaces and our crisp luxury linen. The shower room is chic and, naturally, comes with a cache of White Company toiletries.
