Additional Location Information

Our apartment in West Smithfield sits just five minutes’ walk from stunning Saint Paul’s, a world-famous London icon. With two tube stations nearby, you can reach any sight in the city - but you’re bound to be beguiled by West Smithfield. It’s a fascinating area to explore.

Savvy shoppers will love its small boutiques, for quirky fashion and gift-buying. But you’re a 15-minute walk from Covent Garden for fabulous independent shops, and the Central Line will take you straight from St Paul’s station to Bond Street in just five stops. All the big British brands have flagship stores there, for swanky shopping sprees.

Stroll the streets around your apartment, and you’ll find fascinating remnants of London’s past. The street names themselves summon up long-gone London - Stone Cutter Street, Leather Lane, and Cowcross Street, once used for driving cattle to market.

It’s still well worth a wander down Cowcross Street. You’ll be spoilt for choice of cafes and restaurants here, so it’s ideal for a morning meander and lunch – perhaps at Lazybones, a laid-back restaurant and bar that serves up hearty meat dishes. Feast on pulled pork sandwiches, beef brisket or American-style hot dogs, while admiring the hand-painted pop-culture murals.

Right on West Smithfield, there’s Beppe’s for a top-notch British breakfast, an authentic family-run London gem. Beppe's has old-world charm – it’s been here since the 1930s. Go for the full English, with proper Bubble and Squeak.

For a change from British fare, head down St John Street to Kurz & Lang, a tiny café and takeaway specialising in German sausage. Feed the whole family on bratwurst, currywurst or delicious sausages filled with herbs. They serve good-value set meals with generous helpings of hot sauerkraut.

Just through a hidden archway off Smithfield Square, there’s a treat if you love London history. The glorious Saint Bartholomew the Great church might not be as well-known as Saint Paul’s Cathedral, but you’ll recognise its lovely interior – it’s a star of the big screen, seen in films such as Four Weddings and a Funeral, Shakespeare in Love and The Other Boleyn Girl. There’s a gorgeous café in its cloisters too, for excellent coffee, home-made cakes and beer brewed by monks.

Culture-lovers can walk from the apartment to some of the city’s best art venues. Head across the river for the Tate Modern if you’re a contemporary art buff. The Barbican Centre, minutes away on foot from your apartment, holds a host of international music concerts, and there’s a choice of three cinemas. It’s also been voted London's ugliest building – make your own mind up.

At the nearby Museum of London, learn about the city from the Great Fire to the present day. See the Lord Mayor's State Coach, still used in the annual Lord Mayor's Show; promenade through a Georgian pleasure garden; admire the Art Deco elevator from Selfridge’s department store.

If you need a quiet spot for recuperation, there are green spaces close by too. Don’t miss Postman's Park, down wonderfully-named Little Britain. Look out for the hand-painted plaques, with lovely lettering on Royal Doulton tiles. It’s a curious monument to the untimely end of ordinary Londoners who perished while saving a life. The park is a pleasing place to while away a sunny afternoon, perhaps with a picnic you’ve picked up at a local deli. Try Farm Collective, a superb food shop on Cowcross Street, specialising in local produce.

Wander back to West Smithfield at the end of a fun-packed day, and you’ll feel like a real Londoner - the wonders of the city within easy reach, and a fascinating local neighbourhood to explore.
