The soothing lapping of the river. The hum of the city. Surely, the two are mutually exclusive? Not at Deodar Road. Down in the leafy reaches of Putney, here’s a home that’s chic, smart, and well-connected to London’s urban hotspots, yet quiet and charming, surrounded by mature trees, twisty back streets and ancient pubs.
Inside, Deodar Road has been recently refurbished, while still keeping its original cornicing, fireplaces and stained glass windows. You’ve acres of space, all the mod cons you could possibly want and some spectacular river views.
Your hosts are an energetic pair, he’s an English entrepreneur, while she’s a web designer, who hails from South Africa. They bought Deodar Road when it was a derelict shell, gutted it and turned it into a dream home for their young family.
Head up the private driveway, with room for up to four cars, to Deodar Road’s grand entrance hall. Clack across the parquet flooring and into the kitchen-diner. Here, a curvy bar allows guests to chat to you as you cook, or, shepherd them out on the large terrace overlooking the garden while you get on with uncorking the wine. Downstairs you’ll find a large sitting room, complete with a piano, and a further small kitchen area and dining table, ideal for teenagers who long to be left alone with their pizza.
Up on the first floor, the master bedroom (with its own en suite) is simple, spacious and welcoming. Step out onto the balcony and look out over the river, or go next door to the bunkbedded boys’ room. They’ve a family bathroom, with a snazzy free standing bath, and oodles of White Company toiletries. The next floor holds a simple double, with an ensuite and another terrace, go up again to find a girl’s bedroom, in the prettiest pink. And right up in the loft, those who yearn for peace and solitude will find it in the study, the doors open to the top terrace, with its views of the Thames and the night sky.
Take a stroll down to nearby Putney Bridge, watch the rowers pant their way up the Thames or simply sup a pint in a riverside pub, life in this part of town is a relaxed affair. Nearby Wandsworth Park is a lovely place to stretch your legs, and if you want to hit the shops or grab a bite to eat, nothing beats the boutiques, bars and restaurants of the King’s Road in nearby Chelsea. Or, if it’s town you want, the district line can have you there in less than half an hour.
