Because in this house, the unfinished walls are works of art in themselves. The décor here is a fascinating mix of cultures and climes, resulting in a home that’s welcoming and entirely unique. Whether you’re climbing the spiral stairs to the loft or sitting outside among the geraniums, you’ll feel utterly relaxed.
But don’t slope off for a snooze just yet, for you’re in Islington, the wellspring of London’s liberal intelligentsia. Homeland of Nick Hornby and Tony Blair, the bars are buzzy, the shops are bustling and all the world’s cuisines are on offer…
Country where I want to be
Your host hails from Finland, and arrived in London by way of Geneva, New York, Caracas, Paris, the Bahamas, Oxford, Barcelona and – phew!- Sydney. She initially came to the UK to work in the film industry, but found herself drawn into the world of art, these days she creates pieces and runs her own gallery.
The rough with the smooth
There’s a chilled-out vibe to this home, from the earthy Mediterranean tones of the spacious sitting room to the kitchen’s exposed brickwork. Artwork by your host is dotted all around the house, while the interiors shift seamlessly from wood to weave and back again. Moomins fans will fight over the mugs in the eat-in kitchen, while lovers of the great outdoors will be taking their teas and coffees out on the roof terrace.
On the first floor you’ll find two soothingly neutral double bedrooms and the cool family bathroom. Ascend the quirky spiral staircase to discover another, glacier-white bedroom in the sunny loft.
Out and about
You’re but a short stroll from the avenues of Highbury Fields, where Islington’s writers, actors and politicians come to walk their dogs, chase their children, or simply gossip over a latte. Trendy Upper Street is a six minute walk away. Here you’ll find restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets, boutiques, cafes, florists and books shops beloved by the locals, and bars that swing on into the small hours. And if you want to head into town, catch the Victoria Line from nearby Highbury and Islington station: you’ll be at Oxford Circus in an incredible twelve minutes.
