You’d be forgiven for thinking that Farmer Street was a figment of the imagination. Real life certainly feels very far away when the front door closes behind you. Notting Hill’s a corner of London that’s both affluent and arty, where the creative spirit runs deep through the chocolate box houses, the bustling Portobello Road market, the many independent bookshops, bakeries and boutiques. And right at its heart lies Farmer Street. A bit 1940s, a bit Marrakech, and very London.
Will you do the fandango?
The elder of the two hosts of the house hails from Geneva. As founder member of the charity for which she works, she circles the globe doing good, and in her spare time likes to add to her fabulous collection of souvenirs.
This is also home to a magnificent little girl who’s already exhibiting a precocious talent for drawing. Look out for examples of her (and her mother’s) artwork all around the house. And should all this talent lead you to find yourself inspired to pick up a paintbrush, there’s even a designated scribble wall in the study.
Will not let you go...
Home is where the heart is, and this is a home that is full of heart. Whether it’s the heaps of well-thumbed books, a glorious array of fabrics that encompasses everything from Turkish rugs to antique lace, or the curly chandelier, Farmer Street will have you aglow with pleasure. Nestle down into the sofa, catch up on some reading in the study, bash out a few tunes on the piano or get some dinner on in the fully equipped family kitchen. Nature lovers both big and small will adore the patio garden, overflowing as it is with the prettiest of pot plants.
There’s enough to discover downstairs to keep you exploring late into the night, but when, finally, you’re done, clatter up to the three comfortable bedrooms. Grownups will appreciate the two king sized double beds, freshly made up with the crispest luxury bed linen, while younger members of the party can enjoy their very own bedroom, complete with a whole toy box full of new friends...
If I’m not back again this time tomorrow
All a-jumble with influences that stretch from Cambodia right back to the Cotswolds, Farmer Street’s interiors offer a wonderful base from which to explore the equally funky back streets of Notting Hill. Houses as pretty as sugar plums cluster around the famous Portobello Road antiques market, especially handy if you fancy exporting a bit of our hostess’ boho spirit. Catch a flick at the Coronet Cinema, or snatch an espresso from one of the multitude of glamorous cafes.
Should you want to dine in a more leisurely manner, you’re but a stone’s throw from a selection of the capital’s nicest restaurants. And that’s before you’ve even begun on the West End, just fifteen minutes away...
