There’s nowhere quite like Chelsea. Combining the buzz of Carnaby Street with the more sedate glamour of Kensington, this part of town manages to be affluent, but edgy, venerable, yet bang on trend. This is where old money comes to seek out the new, and you’ll find the children of lords and ladies swapping their tiaras for some very high heels.
And here is Mallord Street, a spacious one bedroom apartment in an art deco mansion block, only moments from Kings Road. Original features, some gorgeous antique furniture and exceptional artwork come together to make this the most comfortable, and comforting of homes.
Out of Africa
Your hosts spend much of their time in Kenya, where they own two further properties. She’s an artist and he’s a doctor, and they can often be found at the theatre, or taking a turn about nearby Battersea Park.
You rang, M’Lord?
Sorry, we couldn’t resist, but Mallord Street does have a decidedly aristocratic air. In particular, be sure to look out for a selection of paintings by Mosler-Pallanberg, one of your hostess’ more illustrious ancestors. The classically proportioned sitting room holds polished antique furniture, an array of books, and an elegant, original fireplace. Gilded frames, glowing tapestries and creamy walls come together to give this room great warmth; formal, it may be, but Mallord Street is entirely welcoming. The study can be transformed into a second bedroom, simply by folding out the king sized sofa bed, or, just use this room for nestling down in front of the TV.
The sunny dining room is resplendent with shining wood and delicate tapestries, while the kitchen is well equipped and charming, with pretty window boxes, and even a small balcony. The smart bathroom features an ultra-modern shower, and then it’s on to the master bedroom; with its king sized bed and lovely art, we don’t just think that you’ll get a good night’s sleep - we know it.
Start with a stroll around Sloane Square, before a little shopping on Kings Road, where you’ve any number of cafes and restaurants in which to find refreshment. Then, maybe see some new writing at the Royal Court theatre, or head into town. Take the tube, or jump on a London bus. There’s a stop one hundred metres from your front door, and you’ll be in town in less than twenty minutes.
