If city life sometimes gets on top of you then Highbury provides a welcome change of pace. One of North London’s villages, there’s a charm and serenity to this area that has attracted generations of intellectuals, artists and bohemians over the years. This beautifully converted double mews house is moments from Highbury Fields, and takes full advantage of the greenery and space that makes this part of town feel so far removed. With four bedrooms, three bathrooms, space inside and out, this home is perfect for any brood. When you want to explore the city, it’s ten minutes from Highbury and Islington tube.
Lady of the manor
Following careers in film and advertising, your hostess now works for the local government. Displaying enviable creative instinct, she was responsible for the design of this home- knocking together two mews houses to create the fabulous sense of space throughout. Along with her teenage daughter and young son, she divides her time between London and Suffolk, where they are currently creating a country retreat.
House of meetings
Undoubtedly this is a home that defies convention, in the most pleasant of ways. Enter to be greeted by a bedroom that’s drenched in light through the full-size windows, has its own brand new shower room, and opens on to the plant-filled garden outside.
Head upstairs to explore the sprawling living space, with dark wood and original exposed brick walls complemented by the large, minimal kitchen and stunning views over the garden from the balcony. There’s plenty for children here, including toys, musical instruments and a Wii, which more than a few adults might enjoy as well.
Up again, the top floor boasts a trio of bedrooms. The master bedroom is a rhapsody in white, with full length windows from which to gaze over the garden and to the fields beyond. There’s even a bath next to the bed for those romantic evenings, and a shower room complete with skylight for inspirational moments. The third double bedroom is simple but beguiling, with an eye-catching green wall, and the children’s room next door, with a single bed and even more toys, is a cosy haven for young ones. A further bathroom across the hall is stuffed full of our White Company toiletries, and undeniably completes a very pleasing picture.
Highbury Fields, virtually on the doorstep of Highbury Terrace Mews, offers plenty of green space to wander around in, making it ideal for children, big and small, who love exploring. The area also boasts La Fromagerie, widely regarded as one of London’s best cheese shops, as well as several upmarket bars and restaurants. The buzz of Islington’s Upper Street is easily accessible, and should you wish to travel further afield, the tube from Highbury and Islington will whisk you into Oxford Circus in about ten minutes.
