Belgravia and St James’s Park are two of London’s most unapologetically grandiose areas. Thronged with enormous houses that echo to the footfall of statesmen, writers and aristocracy, they offer some of the city’s most impressive residences. And at Palace Street, you too have the chance to live like a king or queen by staying in this stunning townhouse in appropriately-named Victoria. Combining domestic comforts with quintessentially English style, you’re guaranteed to enjoy your reign in this four bedroom, three bathroom home.
King and queen
Your hosts are a successful pair who adore living in this charming area with their three children and their border terrier, Truffle. He is the founder of an investment management company, and she’s a doctor. Their favoured haunts include the Goring Hotel (where Kate Middleton spent her last night as a non-royal) and the various parks and historic walks that the surrounding streets offer.
A palatial residence
As you enter, you might hear the sound of a clock chiming. It might be nearby Big Ben, or the sitting room’s oh-so-English grandfather clock, perfectly attuned to its antique-filled surroundings, complete with political cartoons on the wall and a small decked area outside. A study offers space to think, and the basement kitchen has room for any aspiring cook to whip up a regal feast. The TV room next door, scattered with bean bags, offers young princes and princesses all the space they’ll ever need to practice those coronation speeches.
A plaque in the enormous master bedroom proclaims ‘dreams can come true’, and they certainly have in this delectable room, with its slate coloured carpet and gleaming ensuite bathroom. On the second floor are two doubles, one with cricket themed pictures, and a bright feminine room next door. There’s a splendid shower room between the two, stuffed with our White Company goodies. At top of the house is a stylish double and another chic bathroom. Head down to explore the patio, pause to listen for the clip-clop of horses on route to nearby Buckingham Palace.
Nearby, there are a wealth of museums and historic buildings, from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament. You’re right in the centre of things, with all the bars, restaurants, shops and cafes the city has to offer within easy reach. Head to one of the outstanding nearby restaurants, such as the Cinnamon Club or Nahm, or to exercise the royal credit card, the shops of Oxford Circus are a five minute journey from Victoria tube.
